All soldiers deserve a proper funeral when the time comes. If you offer your life to serve your nation, you deserve a decent and dignified sendoff.
Not every veteran has family or friends at death, but they don’t have to be buried alone. When an Air Force veteran died, a group of caring high school students stepped up to carry his casket.
Ralph Lambert, 94, a former United States Air Force veteran, died in Louisiana on February 8, according to KALB. Unfortunately, he did not have any friends or relatives that could attend his funeral.
Lambert served his nation for more than twenty years, from 1950 to 1971, and it was sad to think that the veteran would be buried with no one to commemorate him.
But when Jordan Marks, a local high school baseball coach, learned about the veteran’s circumstances, he stepped in to help. He asked six members of his team, all seniors at Menard High School, to attend the burial and carry Lambert’s casket.
For this coach, it was not only an opportunity to commemorate a veteran but also to teach his players significant life skills off the field.

“I try to teach them the game of baseball but also the game of life, and anytime we can serve a community member or especially somebody that served for our country, we are more than happy to do it,” Marks told radio station KALB.
Six seniors—Ashton Veade, Cameron Kinder, Jacob Giordano, Jackson Ford, Ashton Brodnax, and Hunter Foster—carried Lambert’s flag-draped casket to the Central Louisiana Veterans Cemetery on the day of the funeral.
Even though they didn’t know the veteran at all, it was an honor they’ll never forget.
“It was an honor for us, seniors, to be able to go out there, especially with somebody with no family and friends,” Giordano told KALB-TV.

“I felt sorry, and I’m just glad we had the opportunity to go out there,” said Cameron Kinder. “We all have family and friends, but we forget that someone else doesn’t.”
Stories like these are not uncommon; the sad fact is that some veterans die alone, denied the right to a military funeral. Veterans groups around the United States, such as the Missing in American Project, try to discover unclaimed vets and ensure that they receive proper burial services.
Thankfully, six loving high school seniors ensured this veteran’s burial was not lonely.
Thanks to these elders for honoring this veteran at his funeral. We know he’d have been overjoyed to know someone cared about him at the end.
