Shania Twain started her amazing career as a singer and performer when she was only ten years old.
Later, the Canadian singer would become one of the most famous artists of all time, rewriting the pages of music history in the process. Even now, the 57-year-old woman is still going strong.
In spite of this, Twain’s life has had its share of problems. Because she had a hard childhood, the popular singer had to stop singing for almost ten years.
In a new documentary, Shania herself talks about what happened. Read on to learn everything you need to know about the singing phenomenon…

Shania Twain was born on August 28, 1965, in the Canadian city of Windsor to Eileen Regina Edwards.
When Shania was young, her parents got a divorce. A few years later, Shania’s mother, Sharon, married a man named Jerry.
Shania’s stepfather is Jerry. He was an Ojibwa and took Shania and her two brothers and sisters in. People started calling her Eileen Twain after that.
On the other hand, Shania doesn’t seem to have had an easy or happy childhood. Her mother and the rest of her family were poor, and her stepfather would beat her often.
Shania Twain’s childhood and family life are told in a heartbreaking story.
She felt better when she wrote or listened to music. Even though her stepfather was mean to Shania and the rest of her family, she never went to the police to get help.

“When I was young, I often felt sorry for myself. It was either go to Children’s Aid and be rescued right away or…
Shaina said in an interview, “I thought, ‘If I go to Children’s Aid, we’ll all be split up, and I couldn’t stand that, so we all stayed together through good times and bad.
I wanted to run away. From every source. Unfriendly house. Tensions. There was no food. When you’re hungry, there’s nothing you can do but try to ignore it.
And it does actually work. It does help. Many kids play with dolls, but I preferred to use words and sounds instead.”
Shania Twain started singing when she was three, and she started playing the guitar when she was eight. At age 10, the little girl started writing songs.
Shania’s talent moved her mother, Sharon, so much that she decided to put all her eggs in one basket and make sacrifices to pay for her daughter’s college.
Shania started singing in local clubs and at community events not long after. Giggs helped her mother pay the bills, and by the time Shania graduated from high school in 1983, she knew what she wanted to do with her life: go to Nashville and try to make it as a country singer.
Twain said about how her parents would feel about her success, “I can assure you that they would be jumping for joy.”
I am making and producing my own music. Being able to record their own music is a blessing for a singer-songwriter. It’s really an honor.”
But then both her mother and stepfather died. Twain was, of course, very sad, and she decided to stop making music.
She went back home to take care of her four siblings instead. At the time, the young artist was not giving herself enough time to grieve for her mother and stepfather.
She didn’t think about it until a long time later.
“As I started to peel back the layers of pain I was in, all of the past losses, disappointments, and problems came to the surface.
Then I thought, “I’ve been through worse; let’s put this in perspective.” Shania Twain joined in.

“When my parents died, I felt a grief that was much worse than being betrayed. Since I got over it, I don’t want to give it too much credit.”
Shania had to wait more than five years before she could start a career in the music business.
Then, in 1993, when she signed with Polygram Records as her first record label, she got the chance of a lifetime. She also decided to change her name to “Shania,” which in Ojibwe means “on my path.”
The same year, Shania Twain’s self-titled first album came out. It wasn’t a big hit, but one very important person was interested in it.
The record producer Robert “Mutt” Lange was impressed and wanted to work with her on her next album.
The second album by Twain, which sold more than 12 million copies, was nominated for four Grammys.
Two years later, in 1997, Twain reached new heights. With the release of her third album, Come On Over, which had hits like “That Don’t Impress Me Much” and “You’re Still the One,” the Canadian singer became known around the world.
It’s interesting to know that the partnership with Robert “Mutt” Lange wasn’t all about business. When Twain first saw him, she thought it was love at first sight.
They fell in love and got married in 1993. In 2001, their son, Eja Lange, was born.
“When I first saw Mutt, I knew I liked this guy,” Twain told ABC. I felt like I already cared for him.
But by the time she went on tour in 2004, the singer thought that the spark was gone.
In 2009, Twain asked for a divorce because she thought Lang was having an affair with her close friend Marie-Anne Thiébaud. Lang and Thiébaud both strongly denied this.
Shania’s personal life was hard, but she was still doing very well in her career. Everything will soon change, which is a shame.
In the movie Shania Twain: Not Just A Girl, she talks about getting bitten by a tick in 2003. Unfortunately, it had Lyme’s disease, which it gave to Twain. She said that the signs were “very scary.”
Twain remembered getting dizzy, losing her balance, and being afraid she might fall off the stage while she was performing.
The performer said that she lost consciousness about twice a minute. She wondered if she would ever be able to sing again, even if she got through all of her problems.
“It just started flanging in a weird way and losing control of the airflow. I couldn’t understand it. Shania said, “I thought I’d never be able to sing again because I thought I’d lost my voice for good.
Twain was told she had dysphonia, a physical and physiological condition that makes it hard for her to sing correctly and causes her vocal box muscles to spasm out of control.
Because of it, she couldn’t sing with the same range and power as before.
Shania Twain says, “The muscles physically tighten the vocal box and stop the breath from moving in the right way.”

For years, doctors didn’t know what was causing it. After about seven years, they finally figured out that the problem was caused by Lyme disease.
Twain had a number of throat surgeries to try to fix the damage to her voice. She had trouble speaking normally, so she avoided doing normal things like making phone calls.
After a long time, Shania’s voice eventually came back. At least until she felt like she could start singing again without any trouble.
After she started dating Marie-Anne Thiébaud’s ex-husband, Frédéric Thiébaud, she also found love. The couple got engaged in 2010 and then got married in Rincon, Puerto Rico, on New Year’s Day.
In the end, the pain they both went through brought them closer together. But the truth is that real love can sometimes be found where you least expect it.
Twain told People in 2011 that she didn’t want to fall in love again because it was the last thing on her mind. It’s amazing how things work out in life.

Shania has shown that she is a real professional, even though she had a hard childhood, her parents died when she was just starting out in Nashville, and she had problems with Lyme disease later on.
She never gave up on her big dream of becoming a star, and no one can say she didn’t reach that goal.
