‘Iconic’ actor dies at the age of 96

Jerry Adler, who starred in The Sopranos and The Good Wife, has died. He was 96.

“Jerry Adler died on August 23, 2025, at the age of 96,” his family said in his obituary. “Born on February 4, 1929, Jerry was a resident of New York, New York.”

Following the announcement, Adler’s buddy Frank J. Reilly released many images on X, as well as a memorial.

“The great actor, my friend Jerry Adler, died today at the age of 96,” stated Reilly in a message. “You recognize him from one of his classic roles or from many of his guest appearances. Not bad for a man who didn’t begin acting until he was 65.”

Adler’s manager informed Page Six that the actor “passed peacefully in his sleep in New York City.” A spokesperson for the celebrity did not immediately reply to PEOPLE’s request for comment on Sunday, August 24.

Adler made his acting debut at the age of 62 in the 1991 television series Brooklyn Bridge. He landed his first significant part two years later in Woody Allen’s Manhattan Murder Mystery and went on to star in several additional series in the 1990s, including Alright Already and Hudson Street.

His breakout part came toward the end of the decade in HBO’s The Sopranos. Adler played loan shark Herman ‘Hesh’ Rabkin, Tony Soprano’s closest advisor (played by the late James Gandolfini). He debuted in the show’s first episode in 1999 and continued until the last season in 2007.

Adler’s death comes after his former co-star on the program, Charley Scalies, died in May at the age of 84, after a “long battle” with Alzheimer’s. In 2013, his co-star, James Gandolfini, died of a heart attack at the age of 51.

Following his appearance on The Sopranos, Adler starred as Howard Lyman in the courtroom drama The Good Wife. He appeared in 30 episodes between 2011 and the show’s last season in 2016. Adler reprised her role in the spin-off series The Good Fight for two episodes in 2017 and 2018.

Robert King, executive producer of both shows, stated on X that the actor was originally scheduled to appear in only one episode of The Good Wife before being cast as a series regular.

“Jerry Adler died yesterday.” The plan was to have him for one episode of The Good Wife, but he was so entertaining in a restaurant scene, shrieking, ‘I said ice cream, you stupid b—–,’ that we kept him for six years of The Good Wife and three years of The Good Fight,” King writes. “One of our favorite collaborators.”

Adler’s most recent recognized performance was in the eighth revival season of the comedy Mad About You in 2019.

Adler is survived by his wife, Joan Laxman.
