Introducing the two children raised by Sandra Bullock alongside her late partner, Bryan Randall

In 2010, Sandra Bullock received a life-changing phone call. “Your placement is here,” the voice on the other end said.

Shortly after, she found herself on stage, accepting her first Oscar for her role in The Blind Side. Despite the glamour of the moment, all she wanted was to go home and feed her newborn, Lou, whom she had been waiting years to welcome into her life.

But let’s rewind a bit. In 2005, after Hurricane Katrina devastated Louisiana, Sandra had a strong feeling that led her to consider adoption. “Katrina happened in New Orleans, and something told me, ‘My child is there.’ It was weird,” she said in an interview.

Years later, in January 2010, Sandra received the call she had been waiting for. “He was unexpected, he was not planned,” Sandra shared about Louis Bardo Bullock, the three-month-old boy from New Orleans whom she secretly adopted. “I looked at him like, ‘Oh, there you are.’ It was like he had always been there.”

Just weeks after Lou’s arrival, Sandra found herself on stage at the Kodak Theatre, accepting her Oscar. But her thoughts were with her son at home. “All I kept thinking about was, ‘He’s at home.’ Like, I didn’t care. I didn’t care that I was there, I just wanted to go home and feed Lou,” she said.

Days later, her marriage to Jesse James ended, leaving Sandra as a single mother to an infant. She navigated grief while prioritizing her son’s well-being. “My obligation was to [Lou] and not tainting the first year of his life with my grief,” she explained.

Motherhood shifted Sandra’s priorities from career to family. Lou’s intuition about growing their family led Sandra to adopt Laila, a daughter who joined their family in 2015. Laila, who experienced trauma in foster care, found security and love with Sandra and her partner, Bryan Randall.

Today, Lou is a sensitive and wise 13-year-old, while Laila is described as unafraid and a fighter. Despite the challenges, Sandra cherishes her role as a mother above all else, scaling back her work schedule to focus on her children.
