Jada Pinkett Smith shares some news, saying she and Will Smith have been separated for 7 years…

Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith have been living different lifestyles for quite some time.

In an honest interview with Hoda Kotb on Wednesday’s Today show, the 52-year-old actress admitted to Hoda Kotb that she and her husband Will, 55, had been separated for seven years.

Jada clarified that it was not “a divorce on paper,” as Kotb put it, but rather that “by the time we got to 2016, we were just exhausted with trying.”

“I think we were both kind of stuck in our fantasy of what the other person should be,” she said to the television interviewer.

When Kotb, 59, questioned them about why they hadn’t announced their divorce sooner, Jada responded that they weren’t “ready yet” and that she and the Oscar winner, whom she married on New Year’s Eve 1997, were “still trying to figure out, between the two of us, how to be in partnership.”

“In terms of how we present that to people?” “We hadn’t realized that,” she explained.

The Set It Off star also stated that she “made a promise that there will never be a reason for us to get a divorce,” adding, “We will work through… whatever.”

“I just haven’t been able to break that promise,” she said.

Will and Jada have two children: son Jaden, 25, and daughter Willow, 22. Trey, 30, is the actor’s son from his marriage to ex-wife Sheree Zampino.

Will struck Chris Rock in the face onstage at the 2022 Academy Awards after the comedian, 58, made a joke about her shorn head, according to Jada in her new book. (Jada suffers from alopecia.)

“We were there as a family, not as husband and wife, because we had been living separate lives.” When I heard Will exclaim “wife” in the midst of the mayhem, I had an internal shift of, Oh, s—, I am his wife! “It happens in an instant,” she writes.

Jada continues, “Back in a club back in Baltimore, a fight has broken out, and s— could start popp’n.”

“I’m aware that I’m at the Oscars in a beautiful but very heavy forest-green dress with a high neck, a zippered bodice, and a train a thousand miles long, and I’ve had to stay seated all evening,” she says in the book. “But no matter how much progress I’ve made recently, my old mechanisms are still at work, and my mind is racing with, Oh s—, if I have to fight or run, I’m done!” I can’t even get out of bed!”

“But no matter what,” she says in the book, “Will and I are in this together.”

Fans have always been fascinated by Will and Jada’s wedding. They were proclaimed Hollywood royalty almost immediately after their marriage, which sparked a lot of rumors and intrigue.

“We’re still figuring it out,” Jada says of their marriage in this week’s edition of PEOPLE, indicating they had been apart for six years before the Oscars in 2022. “We’ve been doing a lot of heavy lifting together.” We just have a profound affection for one another and will figure out what it means for us.”

“My children, they’re little gurus,” the actress adds about her offspring. “They’ve taught me a deep sense of self-acceptance.”

“They love every part of me,” Jaden, Willow, and Trey add. “The degree of unconditional affection they have for me and their father It’s one thing to desire to be the one who provides unconditional love. Then there’s being the beneficiary of that.”
