Following a frightening aircraft situation, James Corden apparently served as a voice of reason and a welcoming diversion to his fellow passengers.
The former Late Late Show host was on a British Airways flight from Faro, Portugal, to London when a technical issue prompted the plane to make an emergency landing in Lisbon over the weekend, according to several publications.
Vanessa, a flight passenger, reported that the airline staff instructed passengers to “assemble your belongings to the best of your ability, remove your shoes, and, when instructed by the staff, assume the brake position.” Once we land, if feasible, locate the closest emergency exit and exit the aircraft.”
The plane landed safely and apparently lingered on the tarmac for a lengthy amount of time before passengers were permitted to exit.
British Airways did not immediately reply to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

During the wait, several of Corden’s fellow passengers claim that he took it upon himself to keep the jittery group in good spirits. “He walked up and down the aisles, talking to people and allowing everyone to take selfies with him,” the same traveler told Metro. “She also mentioned that he fist-bumped and praised their pilot when he left the plane later.”
Another alleged eyewitness told ET Online that Corden “took selfies and chatted with people to pass the time.” It was a confusing and frightening situation for many, but the crew and flight crew were supportive during this difficult time.”
Chloe Boemen, a passenger, told the Daily Mail, “James was such a top guy and really lovely man; he was reassuring people and even handing out leftover croissants from the meal service.”
Later, photos from the airport (such as the one at the top) appeared to present a different picture.
They show Corden in what seems to be a heated argument with British Airways staff. With a serious look, he points animatedly at a crew worker.
However, his fellow passengers have now defended him, claiming that Corden remained calm during the tense circumstances and that his questions to personnel represented their own emotions.
“James was not the only one who was unhappy about the flight,” another passenger told ET. “He was nothing but a true gentleman to the other passengers.”
Vanessa, a passenger, claimed that Corden even intervened on their behalf when the airline allegedly said that only guests of a certain class would receive hotel coupons.
“James was a club flyer, and he stood there and said, ‘What about all these folks who’ve brought all these kids with them?’ as if it was unacceptable. “It is not right,” she told Metro.

The event occurred almost a year and a half after Corden made headlines for a claimed outburst at the New York restaurant Balthazar, prompting many to condemn his supposed tantrum.
Keith McNally, 71, the restaurant’s proprietor, criticized the celebrity at the time, stating, “James Corden is a hugely gifted comedian, but a tiny Cretin of a man.” He also described James Corden as the most abusive customer to his Balthazar servers since the restaurant’s opening 25 years ago.
McNally went on to say, “I don’t frequently have 86 customers, but I did today with Corden. It didn’t make me chuckle.
The owner temporarily banned Corden from the establishment, but after he apologized, they “immediately rescinded” the restriction.
