Jennifer Lawrence confessed that filming with Jonah Hill was ‘extremely challenging’

When Netflix released “Don’t Look Up” in 2021, it quickly became a hit, featuring Jennifer Lawrence and Leonardo DiCaprio as astronomers warning about an approaching comet. Despite its popularity, the filming process had its challenges, with Lawrence revealing that working with Jonah Hill was particularly tough. In an interview with Vanity Fair, the 33-year-old actress discussed the difficulties of shooting the dark comedy. Lawrence, portraying astronomer Kate Dibiasky, explained that Hill’s character, Jason Orlean, was “the worst,” making it really hard not to “ruin” every take due to laughter. She recounted dedicating an entire day to Hill improvising insults at her, describing the experience as amazing.

Acknowledging Hill’s improvisational talent, Lawrence revealed that he and Meryl Streep were the standouts in that aspect. Despite some improvised scenes, Lawrence emphasized Hill’s comedic mastery, praising him as a “comedic master.” She mentioned a particular scene that wasn’t in the script, where Hill’s character instructs Lawrence and DiCaprio’s characters to “sit tight and assess.” Reflecting on the moment, Lawrence pointed out that it wasn’t in the script, showcasing Hill’s improvisational skills.

Directed by Adam McKay, the film’s official synopsis revolves around two astronomers on a media tour warning humanity of a planet-threatening comet, met with a distracted world response of “Meh.”

While the behind-the-scenes experience seemed filled with laughter, Lawrence reminded readers that the film’s message about climate change is a serious one. Asked about the key takeaway from the movie, she stressed the importance of handling information differently, advocating for a unified approach to caring for the planet and achieving world peace.
