Jerry Mathers pays a heartbreaking tribute to his late “Leave It to Beaver” co-star Tony Dow

Tony Dow, who portrayed Wally Cleaver on Leave It to Beaver, died at the age of 77 in 2022, and fans all across the world mourned the loss of one of television’s all-time great elder brothers.

Wally was the responsible elder brother who was always providing advice to his younger brother, “the Beaver,” portrayed by Jerry Mathers.

Dow and Mathers created a real-life brotherly closeness as a result of their relationship in the wholesome 1950s comedy.

‘Not only on TV, but in many ways in life,’ says my brother.
Mathers, now 74, paid homage to his late co-star and friend after Dow’s death.

“Tony was not only my brother on TV but in many ways in real life as well,” Mathers said on Facebook. “He leaves a void in my heart that cannot be filled.”

“Tony was always the kindest, most generous, gentle, loving, sincere, and humble man, and it was an honor and privilege to share memories with him for the past 65 years.” Tony was overwhelmed by the compassion and support of our followers all across the world, and he deeply appreciated all the love.”

Beaver aired from 1957 to 1963, and both performers matured over the course of the series. While it was not a tremendous rating hit at the time, it has now become a classic TV show, recognized for its amusing yet wholesome portrayal of perfect 1950s suburban America.

While Dow continued to perform after the series finished, Mathers went back to high school. He enlisted in the United States Air Force Reserve, eventually rising to the rank of sergeant.

In the late 1960s, there was a rumor that Mathers was murdered in Vietnam, but this was not accurate, and he did not see combat. Mathers and Dow spoof the rumor by appearing on Saturday Night Live as their Beaver identities.

While neither Dow nor Mathers was ever able to shake their iconic roles, they were content to enjoy the fame of Leave It to Beaver throughout their lives.

They reprised their roles in a TV movie called Still the Beaver in 1983, which led to a four-season revival series called The New Leave It to Beaver. Previous Beaver actors Barbara Billingsley, Ken Osmond, and Frank Bank all returned for the revival.

Mathers then returned to acting, appearing in a variety of TV programs as a guest star and, in 2007, on Broadway in the musical Hairspray.

Dow and Mathers were also regularly seen together at Leave It to Beaver conventions and fan activities.

Tony Dow stated in May that he had been diagnosed with cancer. On July 26, his management company posted a statement on the actor’s Facebook page announcing his death.

His family then emphasized that he was still alive but in hospice care and nearing the end of his life. A day later, Dow’s family formally acknowledged his death at the age of 77.

They released a statement saying, “We are aware that the loss of this incredible man has affected the entire world.” He was loved by so many people and gave so much to all of us. “It is rare when there is a person who is so universally loved like Tony,” one fan stated.

“Words cannot express how much we will miss him, but we will treasure the memories he left for each and every one of us.”

Mathers, for one, will always remember his on-screen brother fondly: “The world may have lost a star today, but the heavens gained another,” he posted on Facebook.

Dow’s death leaves Mathers as the last remaining primary cast member of Leave It to Beaver. Ken Osmond, who portrayed Eddie Haskell, died in 2020. Hugh Beaumont died in 1982 at the age of 72, while Barbara Billingsley died in 2010 at the age of 94.

We like to Leave It to Beaver, and it’s wonderful to see that these two on-screen brothers have such a wonderful connection in real life.

Tony Dow, may you rest in peace. Please share this tale with your favorite Leave It to Beaver memories.
