Jessica Simpson performs on ‘American Idol,’ sparking discussion online

Jessica Simpson, who just divorced her husband, chatted with Access Hollywood following her participation on “American Idol,” sharing her thoughts on returning to television after so long. Jessica Simpson returned to television for the first time in 15 years on Sunday night’s (May 18, 2025) Season 23 finale of “American Idol.” She sang alone and then performed a duet with Josh King, a contender who had previously been eliminated from the competition. While she gave her best during her performances, it was her looks that received the most attention online.

All eyes were automatically drawn to Simpson as he took the stage. She appeared like a seasoned diva regaining her moment, dressed in a beautiful gold gown that fit her figure and glimmered beneath the deep, violet lighting.

Her long, honey-blonde hair was styled in delicate waves around her face, and her makeup featured dramatic lashes and a glossy nude lip.

She went center stage to perform her new track, “Blame Me,” off her current EP, “Nashville Canyon, Pt. 1.”

Simpson’s voice rang out with deep tones as she performed with a complete live band. She sang with her eyes wide and closed at moments, immersing the listener in the sheer vulnerability of the words. As the audience cheered, she delivered each word with real emotion, obviously affected by the event.

At the end of her performance, she grinned shyly, placed a hand over her midriff in a move that appeared to combine modesty and relief, just as a wave of applause erupted over the room.

Simpson transitioned seamlessly into her next performance. She greeted previous participant King onstage with an enthusiastic “Come on, Josh!” King, dressed in a glossy suit jacket and cowboy hat, raised his hat in reverence as they began a rousing duet of Simpson’s 2005 rendition of “These Boots Are Made for Walkin'”—her'”contemporary take on Nancy Sinatra’s classic.

Trading verses and stage glances, the duo added a lighthearted spark to the song, bringing together generations of fans in one euphoric moment.

In an unexpected move, King took out a harmonica mid-song, weaving in his style as Simpson stayed on the tune. By the final chorus, King and Simpson were in close proximity, reaching a climactic high note before sharing a tender embrace.

While the live audience erupted with enthusiasm, the internet reaction to Simpson’s reappearance was significantly more split. Moments after the program aired, social media platforms were buzzing—not just about her singing, but disproportionately about her looks.

When questioned about the start of her path, Simpson recalled her breakthrough moment in the profession. “I Want to Love You Forever, my first single, was my first big record,” the singer recalled.

“It was a tremendous power ballad, like someone would sing on ‘American Idol.’ Luckily, I didn’t have to sing it tonight,” she said with a giggle.

Looking ahead, Simpson announced she’ll be back in front of the camera, this time for a cameo in Ryan Murphy’s new Hulu comedy “All’s Fair.”

Before entering the spotlight, Simpson gave fans an inside look at her big night. Before the concert, the singer posted a lighthearted video on Instagram.

In the brief video, she seemed composed yet lively, wearing huge black eyeglasses and a comfortable black cardigan that hung casually over her shoulder. As she stood on the stairs of her trailer, she smiled at the camera and, with a hint of sass, stuck out her tongue.

The camera then turned to a white sign on the side of the trailer that stated, “American Idol Jessica Simpson.” The actress captioned her video clip, “American Idol Rehearsal 💫.”

Aside from her current professional endeavors in the business, Simpson’s personal life is undergoing significant changes. In January of the current year (2025), the 44-year-old celebrity stated that she and her ten-year-old spouse, former NFL player Eric Johnson, are splitting up.

Simpson addressed the transition with honesty and empathy in an exclusive message to People. “Eric and I have been living separately while navigating a tough issue in our marriage,” she told me.

Simpson went on, “Our children come first, and we are focused on what is best for them.” We appreciate all of the love and support that has come our way, and we value privacy right now as we work through these issues as a family.”

Though her return to the stage represented a victorious comeback to the public eye, Simpson’s personal problems behind the scenes point to a new chapter of reinvention — one in which perseverance, self-expression, and transformation intersect both on and off stage.
