Jimmy Kimmel is officially a grandfather!
The 57-year-old Jimmy Kimmel Live! star became a grandfather after his daughter Katie gave birth to her first child, a daughter, with husband Will Logsdon.
Kimmel announced their joyous news on Tuesday, May 20, during his talk show’s opening monologue. “The baby’s very healthy,” he stated before announcing his granddaughter’s name.
“They gave her such a nice name.” Her name is Melania,” he said, adding, “It’s Melania Thee Stallion.”
He went on to reveal his granddaughter’s true name, Patti Joan.
The newborn’s first name is “like the melt, but with an ‘I’ not a ‘Y.'” Kimmel explained that his mother’s name inspired her middle name, Joan.
Kimmel was absent from Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Monday, May 19, the day Katie gave birth.
“We were supposed to have a show last night, but we didn’t because my daughter had a baby last night,” Kimmel said at the beginning of the broadcast. “My eldest daughter—you know, folks who know I have two small children are unaware that I also have two older children. My oldest daughter is 83 years old. Her name is Katie. Katie and her husband, Will, welcomed a baby girl precisely while we were filming our show last night. So I opted to be there rather than here.”
Kimmel skipped a program for the second time in 22 years. The last was when he had his appendix removed.
Kimmel was surrounded by friends and family on his daughter’s special day. “We had an army of people at the hospital; it was bigger than Coachella,” he said.
He heaped additional appreciation on longtime sidekick Guillermo Rodriguez. “You were such a great doula,” he quipped. “You were soothing, quiet, and had gentle hands. You were great. Thank you so much, on behalf of the entire family.
Kimmel has a daughter, Katie, 33, and a son, Kevin, 31, with ex-wife Gina Maddy. He is also the father of son Billy, 8, and daughter Jane, 10, whom he shares with wife Molly McNearney.
Kimmel revealed during the Disney Upfront on Tuesday, May 13, that his daughter was pregnant and set to give birth to his first grandson. “My oldest daughter is going to have a baby.” I’m holding for applause,” Kimmel remarked during the pre-recorded sketch. “I believe I am receiving applause, applause, applause. Thank you.” I am going to be a grandfather.”
He joked that the ceremony would be a contest for his grandchild’s naming rights.
Katie married her spouse, Logsdon, in September 2021. Kimmel discussed Katie’s ceremony on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. “She actually turned 30 two weeks ago, which is strange to have a 30-year-old daughter,” he told me. “And she is getting married this weekend, which is a big deal.”
As host Ellen DeGeneres complimented him, Kimmel said, “Yeah, I guess.”
“People keep saying congratulations,” he said. “I don’t understand why people are praising me.” Congratulations on developing a human who is appealing enough to be pursued by a single person. It’s not like we were trying to get rid of her, you understand? It is not as if we are selling a houseboat on eBay or something like that. But I suppose congrats are the thing.”
Kimmel also revealed that he likes Katie’s husband, Logsdon. “People also ask questions like, ‘How’s the guy?’ And I’ll tell you, the man is great,” he said. “His name is Will, and he’s an awesome man. And if he wasn’t, he would have died right now.”
