Madeleine McCann’s disappearance remains one of the world’s most terrible mysteries, and a controversial new documentary sparked renewed worldwide attention last week.
While her parents have not replied publicly to the recent results, Kate McCann has already spoken out about a terrible regret that continues to weigh heavily on her.
Her biggest regret
Following the publication of a distressing new documentary, the mystery surrounding Madeleine McCann’s disappearance has returned to the forefront. The Unseen Evidence, a collaborative investigation by Channel 4 and The Sun, has stunned viewers with previously unknown revelations about the case’s leading suspect, Christian Brueckner.

The video reveals alarming evidence from a 2016 raid on Brueckner’s rural German farm, which included 75 children’s swimsuits, toys, and a hard drive with pornographic content. Most alarmingly, investigators discovered six USB sticks and two memory cards buried beneath his dog’s body.
As the world reacts to these facts, Madeleine’s parents keep mute — yet Kate McCann’s previous remark about her worst regret lingers.
Madeleine McCann’s disappearance in 2007 was a parent’s greatest fear. The McCanns had planned a pleasant vacation in the Portuguese resort town of Praia da Luz, but what transpired inside their holiday apartment continues to perplex authorities, the public, and Madeleine’s loved ones.
That night, Madeleine’s parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, had left her and her younger twin siblings, Sean and Amelie, asleep in the apartment while they went out to eat at a local tapas restaurant. Kate returned to the apartment at 10 p.m. to check on the kids, only to discover that Madeleine had disappeared.
Kate went to check on herself, only to discover the children’s bedroom door wide open. As she attempted to close it, it crashed shut, exposing that the window and shutter were ajar. Madeleine’s blanket and Cuddle Cat were still on the bed, but she had disappeared.
Kate hurried to the restaurant, yelling, “Madeleine’s gone!” “Someone has taken her!”

Sixty staff members and visitors hurried in a midnight hunt, hoping that young Madeleine had just wandered away. But when daylight broke, optimism faded, and over 18 years later, the awful fact remains: she was never found.
The restaurant’s note
In the aftermath of Madeleine McCann’s disappearance, one detail has troubled her mother, Kate, more than any other: an apparently simple restaurant note that, in retrospect, seems like a disastrous error.
In her 2011 memoir Madeleine: Our Daughter’s Disappearance and the Continuing Search for Her, Kate McCann revealed the moment that will haunt her “until the end of [their] days.”
Kate and Gerry had booked a specific seat at the restaurant of the Ocean Club resort on the night Madeleine disappeared—one with a clear view of their holiday apartment, where Madeleine and her younger twin siblings, Sean and Amelie, slept.
Their idea was to dine nearby and check on the kids every half hour. However, the McCanns were unaware that the resort’s personnel had documented their request in writing, along with the rationale behind it. That memo, which was designed to clarify their seating preference, turned out to be an intolerable source of shame.
“To my horror,” says Kate, “I saw that, no doubt in all innocence and simply to explain why she was bending the rules a bit, the receptionist had added the reason for our request: we wanted to eat close to our apartments as we were leaving our young children alone there and checking on them intermittently.”
The statement was apparently scrawled in a book at the swimming pool reception, requesting that the same table be booked each night at 8:30 p.m. for Kate, Gerry, and their friends, with the caveat that the group’s children would be sleeping alone in neighboring apartments.
Kate’s dread is chilling: the kidnapper may have seen the message.
“We now bitterly regret it and will do so until the end of our days,” the woman wrote.

While the mystery surrounding Madeleine McCann’s abduction remains unresolved, her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, continue to grieve terribly.
Although they have not commented on the recently released documentary The Unseen Evidence, which revisits disturbing details linked to the primary suspect Christian Brueckner, the McCanns did issue a heartfelt statement just four days before the documentary aired, marking 18 years since their daughter was kidnapped.
“As we arrive at the 18th anniversary of Madeleine’s abduction, we’d like to thank our faithful supporters once again for standing by us and never forgetting about Madeleine,” they said on Friday, May 3rd.
The pair acknowledged the passage of time, adding, “The years seem to be passing even more rapidly, and while we have no substantial news to report, our commitment to ‘leave no stone unturned’ remains unshakable. We shall do everything possible to attain this goal.”
They also reminded supporters that May is not just the month Madeleine went missing, but also her birthday—she will turn 22 this year.
“No matter how near or far she is, she continues to be right here with us every day, but especially on her special day,” they told us. “We continue to ‘celebrate’ her as the stunningly gorgeous and unique individual she is.” We miss her.
