Kate Middleton posed for a photograph on a recent “sunny and leafy stroll,” but rather than flashing her famed grin for the camera, she revealed a different side of herself.
On May 29, photographer Josh Shinner, who has previously photographed the Princess of Wales’ family, including Prince Louis’ recent 7th birthday image, published a shot of Kate on Instagram.
“Great company for a sunny, leafy stroll…” “Thanks, @princeandprincessofwales,” he captioned the photo.
The breathtaking photograph was taken on the Isle of Mull during a recent visit and was released earlier this month in conjunction with the Royal Horticultural Society’s announcement that a rose had been named in Princess Kate’s honor. Kate and Prince William visited the Scottish island at the end of April, and the Princess of Wales appears in the photo dressed in the same clothes she wore for their royal engagement of visiting rangers at the Ardura Community Forest, who play an important role in local conservation.
The photograph depicts the monarch with her arms crossed, displaying the engagement ring originally worn by Princess Diana, and looking squarely at the camera. Instead of a full smile, Kate smirked as she took in the scenery outside.
Princess Kate has long advocated for spending time outside, but her connection to nature became more meaningful during her cancer treatment last year.
In her first health update since revealing her cancer diagnosis, she appeared in a photo resting against a tree in a stance similar to Shinner’s portrait. According to royal biographer Sally Bedell Smith, “There she is in nature, which has fortified her, and looking upward in a sign of real hope and encouragement for everybody.”
The Princess of Wales also opted to commemorate Mother Nature on the United Kingdom’s version of Mother’s Day in March, posting a video of various outdoor landscapes.

Princess Kate and Prince William have withdrawn from public view this week to allow their three children, Prince George, 11, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, 7, to enjoy a school break. During school vacations, the pair frequently shortens their royal trips to spend more time together as a family unit.
