Everyone dislikes cleaning dishes, but using a dishwasher makes the laborious task much simpler. However, an increasing number of customers have stated that their dishwashers make the task tougher by not correctly fitting their dishes.
Some items are simply too tough or bothersome to clean by hand. Wine glasses always come out smudged. Anything that has grease or oil on it will usually emerge from the sink with a small amount of residue still on it. Are there large cooking items, like pots and pans, that have food residue on them? Good luck. The dishwasher is an ideal option, yet many of these items never seem to fit!
And here is where Twitter user Mike McLoughlin (@zuroph) comes in. McLoughlin made a discovery about his dishwasher that permanently altered the way he did dishes.
O. M. G.
I hate that my dishwasher is too short for my plates. Every time I load it, I shout “who designed this stupid thing?”Thank you 1000 times, Mike.

For a decade, the Irishman believed that the bottom rack of his washer was just too tiny to accommodate his huge dinner plates. Then he made a remarkable discovery: the top rack is adjustable. I repeat: the top rack is adjustable!
In a now-viral Twitter/X post, McLoughlin wrote:
“I moved to this house in 2008. It always irritated me that the lower level of the dishwasher couldn’t accommodate my largest dinner plates. I’ve been handwashing them all this time. This week, I found that you can lift the higher shelf, and all of my plates fit perfectly. “TEN FUCKING YEARS,” he wrote on X.
You may even lower the upper shelf to fit taller glasses, such as wine glasses. So, depending on what you want to wash, your dishwasher may be able to accommodate anything. Check your dishwasher’s owner’s handbook for instructions (or search it up online if you don’t have one), but most models feature a little plastic lever that you can push to change the height.
Mind blown!

The tweet went completely viral and was shared over 14,000 times. It appears McLoughlin was not the only one who was unaware that most dishwashers have this feature.
The “hack” (is it still referred to as a hack if the device is performing its intended function?) blew people’s minds.
“Err, not just you, mate.” I’ve lived in this house for four years and didn’t realize…” a user wrote.
“I woke up this morning.” I saw your tweet. Leaped out of bed and furiously emptied the top rack of the dishwasher. Viola! “Rack, move up,” urged another.
But some folks were like, “Seriously, dude?”
A few commenters were unimpressed with McLoughlin’s discovery. Some people appear to be familiar with the moveable top rack.
The magic of twitter. 5 years of confusion about why my dishwasher was the only one on the planet that didn’t fit normal dinner plates. A year of measuring every dinner plate that crossed my path for one that might. Fixed in 30 seconds. @zuroph you are my hero. https://t.co/dYIuXD5Itq

While a handful of others sought to outdo McLoughlin with their own stories:
“18 years! I’ve owned mine for 18 years and only recently noticed! I used to put the plates down so they would wash! I’m enraged and delighted all at the same time. Do you have any more useful ideas for living a more efficient life?” wrote a user named Toby.
Most people, however, were just grateful for the knowledge and relieved that they would no longer have to live in the Dark Ages.
Wait till they realize that several models allow you to totally remove the top rack! It’s generally more complex, but once you do, you’ll have access to a whole new universe of washing alternatives. Without the top rack, your dishwasher can certainly accommodate your largest and most difficult pots and trays.
Okay, go ahead and check your dishwasher. You know you want to.
