Meghan Markle shares second-date photo with Prince Harry and reveals Fourth of July tradition their children recreate

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are continuing a particular Fourth of July tradition.

Meghan posted a romantic photo with Harry on Friday, July 4, revealing a beloved custom the pair has continued every Independence Day since their second date.

Meghan, 43, shared the image on Instagram, which shows her cuddling up next to a grinning Harry, 40, as well as two photos of Fourth of July-themed red, white, and blue cupcakes.

“Our second date was on July 4th, 2016, and H brought me cupcakes to celebrate,” the Duchess of Sussex began her caption. “Now, all these years later, our two children are in on the tradition.”

Meghan signed off with, “Happy Independence Day!” “May your day be as sweet as these cupcakes!”

The first image in the series is a plate of cupcakes she and Harry cooked on Friday with their two children, Archie, 6, and Lilibet, 4. The final photo shows a cupcake Harry brought her in 2016.

A black-and-white version of the selfie was originally featured in the couple’s 2022 Netflix documentary Harry & Meghan.

Meghan and Harry’s second date took place at London’s Soho House, which was also the location of their first date, which occurred only one day earlier.

The Duke of Sussex discussed the day and its significance to him in his 2023 memoir, Spare.

“She strolled in wearing a beautiful blue sundress with white pinstripes. She was radiant. I stepped forward and said, “I bear gifts.” A pink box. I held it forward. She shook it. “What is this?” Harry wrote.

“She opened the package. Cupcakes. The package contained red, white, and blue cupcakes. They were celebrating Independence Day. I mentioned something about the Brits having a completely different view of Independence Day than the Yanks, but, oh, well,” he added, adding that Meghan thought the treats “looked fantastic.”

After their server left, they kissed.

“Again, the discussion flowed and cracked. Burgers arrived and left, uneaten. I had an overpowering impression of Overture, Prelude, Kettle Drums, and Act I. However, there is also a sense of ending. “A phase of my life—the first half?—was coming to an end,” he explained of the beginning of their romance.

Earlier on Friday, Meghan shared additional photos from her Fourth of July celebrations on her lifestyle business As Ever’s Instagram account. The Duchess can be seen constructing a red, white, and blue charcuterie board in a brief video that appears to have been shot at her and Harry’s home in Montecito, California. The caption was simply, “Happy 4th of July!”

Though Harry has remained a British citizen since he and Meghan stepped down as senior working members of the royal family in 2020, the prince has stated that he has explored getting a United States citizenship.

“American citizenship is a thought that has crossed my mind but certainly not something that is a high priority for me right now,” he told Good Morning America’s Will Reeve in February 2024, at the Invictus Games Vancouver Whistler 2025’s One Year to Go celebration in Canada.

When asked if he enjoyed living in the United States, the Duke of Sussex responded, “It’s great. I enjoy every day.” Harry mitigated his emotion, however, by stating that he did not feel “American.” “Do I feel American?” Um, no. “I’m not sure how I feel,” he explained.
