Melissa Gilbert shares some intriguing details about working with Michael Landon Jr. on When Calls the Heart…

Melissa Gilbert is using a unique opportunity to reunite with an old friend.

Gilbert, who is now appearing in the Off-Broadway show Still, also appears as Georgie McGill in Hallmark’s When Calls the Heart. McGill arrives in Hope Valley, and people immediately realize she has a history with one of the inhabitants, Bill Avery (Jack Wagner).

Working on the program reunites the Little House on the Prairie alumni with Michael Landon Jr., whose father, Michael Landon, co-starred with Gilbert on the popular TV series that aired from 1974 to 1983. The older Landon portrayed Charles, the father of the Ingalls family, while Gilbert played Laura, the family’s daughter and heroine.

“It feels like returning home. Gilbert, 60, tells PEOPLE that working with Mike Jr. feels like coming home.

“I am confident that anything he has me do and say will be fantastic, thrilling, and engaging. We’ve been friends for 50-odd years, and I admire him and his family.” I think his wife is just the greatest,” she exclaims. “It’s just so nice to be back in an environment where I feel completely protected, appreciated, and loved.”

Gilbert also feels comfortable, respected, and valued at Modern Prairie, the business she co-founded, which has its own online community.

We’re experiencing rapid growth in both anticipated and unexpected directions, which is truly exciting… The app and the community continue to expand, and what truly moves me is how the ladies on this app connect with one another,” the actress says.

“It’s so different from any other social media platform because there’s no backbiting, there’s no anger, there’s no politics, there’s no bitterness, there’s nothing but love and understanding and support for one another no matter what we’re going through,” Gilbert tells us.

“I wish there was more of it out there. I am immensely pleased with this community that is now growing on its own. Not only did my partner Nicole and I give them this platform, but they’ve done amazing things with it. I have a lot of respect for the Prairians. They’re a great bunch of pals to have.”

The show is currently performing a limited engagement at The Sheen Center for Thought and Culture’s Loreto Theater in New York City until March 23. Tickets are available online, over the phone, and at the Sheen Center box office.
