It was a story of two national anthems during Thursday’s NFL start between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Detroit Lions, with supporters voicing their preferences loudly.
Video from the pregame ceremony shows Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes crossing the field as boos pelt Arrowhead Stadium in protest of the “Black national anthem,” titled “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” which has been played at NFL games in the years since George Floyd’s death and the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement.
Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who began kneeling during the National Anthem in 2016 and sparked uproar among patriotic fans, is primarily responsible for the introduction of BLM politics into football.
Following her performance, a fighter jet passed overhead while military officials held their ceremonial weapons, emphasizing that the national anthem will never be replaced or equaled among football fans.
Liberal X users took advantage of the situation to criticize patriotic supporters for booing the Kansas City Boys and Girls Choir, which played the black national song.
However, pro-America X users appeared to outnumber detractors as they chastised the NFL for putting politics into America’s pastime, with some advocating for the organization to be given the “Bud Light treatment.”
In recent years, the NFL has sent inconsistent messages about social justice. In August, spectators observed that the “End Racism” message spanning across the back of the end zone had been replaced with the more usual “Play Football” tagline.
