Nobody sang “God Bless America” the way Kate Smith did

Dean Martin collaborated with Kate Smith on ‘The Dean Martin Show’ to give a mix of American songs in one of his most patriotic performances.

A choir of singers and dancers clad in red, white, and blue performed. Barbara Eden, Mickey Rooney, and Norm Crosby joined Dean and Kate on the red carpet. Barbara Eden donned a pink gown, and Kate Smith wore a sequined red and black gown, while the three men wore tuxedos.

Dean and Kate opened the show with ‘Yankee Doodle Dandy,’ followed by ‘My Old Kentucky Home,’ with the audience joining in. The medley then moved on to ‘You’re a Grand Old Flag,’ with singers and dancers on stage. Dean went towards the camera to recite President Roosevelt’s introduction of Kate Smith 30 years before as she began, ‘God Bless America.’

Kate Smith was regarded as ‘The Songbird of the South’ because of her fame during WWII, and she had a five-decade radio and television career. Her majestic version of Irving Berlin’s ‘God Bless America’ had the orchestra playing the iconic fanfare as her voice rose to the song’s last high note.

The beautiful performance astounded the crowd.

The performance was a passionate homage to America, including the era’s brightest talents. ‘The Dean Martin Show’ aired for 264 episodes from 1965 to 1974, with the theme tune being Dean’s 1964 smash ‘Everybody Loves Somebody.’ Dean ended his set with the same tune.

Overall, the concert was a stirring demonstration of patriotism that made the audience glad to be American. Dean Martin was recognized for his numerous special guests throughout the years, but his appearance on ‘The Dean Martin Show’ with Kate Smith remains one of his most legendary performances.
