Jeremy Piven has revealed that his mother, Joyce Piven, died at the age of 94.
The actor, 56, announced the news on Sunday, Jan. 19, in an emotional Instagram post including a sequence of images of himself and his mother.
The first photo showed Jeremy smiling as his mother put her head on his shoulder, while the rest of the carousel included vintage photographs of the two together, culminating with a shot of Jeremy clutching his mother’s hand in the hospital.
“Joyce Piven has left us,” the caption said. “I pretended that this day would never arrive, yet here we are. If you know me, you know how much I adore this woman. Yes, she is my mother, but she was also an amazing person.”
He continued, “She was an acting teacher to many of us who genuinely enjoyed watching her students grow.” She taught us to appreciate the space we occupy when performing, instilling the value of the work and how fortunate we are to have it.
Joyce, a director, teacher, and performer, created the Piven Theatre Workshop with her late husband, Byrne Piven, in 1974.
Jeremy explained, “When we would run lines together (until the end), she would step into the character and do whatever accent was required.” “I secretly filmed her and showed the director, and she got the role!”
“They all claimed she was too fragile to fly, but we did it anyway,” the celebrity said. She received a standing ovation on set (I’ve watched over 80 movies and have never seen it before), and she was a voracious reader 15 years ago.
“She gave me an Arthur Miller short story, ‘The Performance,’ which she treasured for years before it became a film. She’d question me about it every day. We’re all walking marvels.” The film is a tribute to her,” he added of his 2023 flick.

Jeremy went on to remark that he didn’t know how he’d “navigate” life without his mother; “yet this beautiful life is about transformation, which was one of her theater games.”
“They taught us that comedy and drama can coexist, just like in life.” She touched so many people,” he remarked. “She taught acting not to become a professional, but to discover yourself.”
Jeremy remarked, “She was graceful until her final breath.” Always be the instructor… We don’t know how long we’ll be here in this human form, but I know we lost a beneficial one. She’s dancing with my dad. “Be nice to each other.”
Several stars expressed their sympathies to Jeremy in the comments area, with Jamie Foxx writing, “❤️❤️❤️,” and Cindy Crawford posting, “Such a lovely tribute.” Your mother sounds like a true blessing.
In addition to Jeremy, Joyce and Byrne had a daughter, Shira Piven, who died aged 72 in 2002. Since 1954, the couple has maintained their marriage.
