People who didn’t understand her illness made fun of her, calling her unpleasant names such as ‘monster’ and ‘zombie.’ But her spouse has the ideal response to critics…

Because of the growth of social media, we are all bombarded with photographs of allegedly perfect-looking individuals; it appears that the world has gotten even more shallow in terms of how people are appraised.

For those of us who do not match the stereotyped “perfect” pattern, the world may look incredibly cruel, with total strangers feeling compelled to condemn someone based on their appearance on social media.

Karine de Souza understands this better than anyone. Due to her uncommon skin condition, the Brazilian has spent her whole life wearing SPF100 sunscreens, even while she is at home.

The 33-year-old was diagnosed with xeroderma pigmentosum when she was three years old, which puts her at high risk for skin cancer.

Her incurable “one-in-a-million” illness makes her very vulnerable to UV radiation since she cannot heal any sun damage to her skin.

Only a few minutes in the sun can result in excruciating sunburn for her. Growing up, she was frequently cut off from the outside world since it was too unsafe for her to spend too much time outside her home.

“When I expose myself to the light, nothing happens right away; I don’t feel anything. However, in the future, the lesions will form and require removal due to malignancy,” she warns.

Karine has undergone 130 surgical operations to treat sun-induced lesions, including the removal of her lower lip and part of her nose.

Unfortunately, she is facing more than just a physical war. People frequently glance at Karine on the street and verbally abuse her both in her town and online.

Despite her suffering, she stays optimistic, and she has even found love.

She met her husband, Edmilson, on social networking, and he fell in love with her “story and strength.” Edmilson had always been by Karine’s side and knew he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her.

He also chose to accept Karine’s three children from her former relationship, which obviously meant a lot to her.

“He came, and he showed me that I could live a true love story,” she relates.

However, Karine once again faced a slew of hateful remarks after uploading images of them together online.

“We have already read many offensive comments calling me a monster, deformed, and zombie,” Karine told the Daily Mail.

Other remarks implied that their connection was not genuine, that Karine was a “sugar mommy,” and that she must be extremely wealthy.

“Because of the fact that he’s a young man and pretty, that caught people’s attention, and they didn’t believe that he was with me because he really liked me,” Karine told me.

A photographer, who documented the couple’s engagement, shared a selection of the photos online with the following caption:

“In a world where appearance is more important than emotion, they met not by chance, but by a gathering of souls; an encounter of acceptance, character, and love emerged when their souls met, and you are now an inspiration to so many people who do not believe in themselves, in life, or especially in love.

“I thank you every day for being who you are.” STOP whining about how you are. Hug life and embrace yourself. Many thanks for teaching me so much. You guys are wonderful. You are the missing hope for countless individuals. Thank you for the enormous embrace and the lovely day we had together. I’ll cherish your grin with me forever.”

His sincere remarks and the stunning photographs he snapped of Karine and Edmilson went viral, with hundreds of people applauding them.

Karine wants others to understand the value of being optimistic.

“Be happy, smile, because life happens only once,” she went on.

Karine and Edmílson are overjoyed with their new baby daughter, born in 2023. Their daughter, Zaia, had been a long time coming; Karine and her husband had been trying for a baby since 2020.

Karine has gone through a lot, but owing to her optimistic attitude, she has discovered the happiness she deserves.
