Phil Collins is talking about how his health issues have impacted his ambition to perform music.
The 74-year-old “In the Air Tonight” singer withdrew from playing drums in 2022 due to health difficulties that made it impossible for him to pick up a drumstick.
In a new interview with MOJO magazine, Collins stated that while he has considered going into his studio to potentially record new songs, his illness has prevented him from doing so.
“I keep thinking about going down to the studio and seeing what happens. “But I’m not hungry for it anymore,” he said. “The problem lies in the fact that I have been extremely ill.”

The Genesis rocker’s most recent solo album of new songs, Testify, was released in 2002. He published Going Back in 2010, which contained versions of Motown and soul songs, and hasn’t produced anything new since.
When Genesis toured for the final time in 2022, Collins performed from a chair while his son Nic, 23, took over on drums.
In the documentary Phil Collins: Drummer First, released in December, the eight-time Grammy winner discussed his ailment and how painful it was for him to be unable to perform.
“It’s still kind of sinking in a bit,” he remarked in the documentary, which was shot in October 2022. “I’ve spent my entire life playing drums. To suddenly be unable to do so is a shock.”

Collins had been playing the instrument since he was five years old, and he stated that all those years of hammering away had “taken its toll on my hands, legs.”
“If I can’t do what I did as well as I did it, I’d rather relax and not do anything,” he told me. “I’ll try my hand at drumsticks if I wake up one day and can grasp them.” But I feel like I’ve exhausted my flight miles.”
Though Collins has not provided any further information about his ailment, a Facebook post from 2017 stated that he suffers from drop foot “as a result of a back operation, which makes it difficult to walk.”
Nic discussed how his father underwent extensive neck surgery in 2015.
Collins admitted on BBC Breakfast in 2021 that physical limitations prevent him from playing.
