Remains of guy lost for 22 years were found by someone using Google Earth to check over the old area…

A disturbing image that remained visible on Google Earth for years revealed the resting place of William Moldt, who had disappeared decades earlier. Moldt went missing from Lantana, Florida, in November 1997, leaving authorities baffled at the time. After nearly 22 years of uncertainty, Moldt’s remains were discovered in August 2019 when a car with skeletal remains was found in a pond in Moon Bay Circle, Wellington.

Moldt, 40 years old at the time of his disappearance, had been returning from a nightclub and called his girlfriend around 9:30 pm to inform her that he would be home soon. This was the last communication she had with him. In 2019, police were alerted to the submerged vehicle by a person using Google Earth to check their old neighborhood. The car had been visible on Google Earth since 2007, but it went unnoticed until 2019.

The Grand Isles housing development manager in Wellington spotted the submerged vehicle in a pond on the site. After investigation, the car was confirmed to belong to Moldt, and his remains were positively identified. The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office suggested that Moldt may have lost control of his vehicle and driven into the pond, although there was initially no evidence of this during the investigation into his disappearance. The shift of water in the pond obscured the car, making it visible only years later.

Police spokeswoman Therese Barbera acknowledged the difficulty in reconstructing the events, stating, “You can’t determine what happened that many years ago, what transpired. All we know is that he went missing off the face of the Earth, and now he’s been discovered.” The case highlights the unexpected ways in which technology, like Google Earth, can contribute to solving cold cases and bringing closure to families.
