Richard Gere has been wearing the same beaded bracelet for years, but not everyone knows that it has a special meaning…

Richard Gere’s dress sense is classic.

Whether he’s on the red carpet or television, his impeccable suit and button-down shirt are a common sight. The silver fox’s stylish attire has stayed unchanged during his 50-year tenure.

Every day, the 75-year-old actor wears the same accessory: an inconspicuous Tibetan prayer bracelet.

Gere, a devout Buddhist, told the journal Lion’s Roar in 1999 that his first experience with Buddhism was at school, but his “first encounter with Buddhist dharma” was in his twenties. Since then, he has been a practicing Buddhist, which is why he usually wears his prayer beads, or mala bracelet, on his wrist.

Like any other religious sign, people commonly use mala bracelets to count mantras or prayers and serve as reminders throughout the day. A variety of materials, including wood, seeds, jewels, or metal, can form the beads, each serving a specific purpose. The most traditional material for bracelets is sandalwood.

Recently, viewers have spotted Gere wearing his bracelet during television appearances, particularly on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on November 20, where he revealed his Thanksgiving plans for this year. PEOPLE’s 1999 Sexiest Man Alive informed the audience that he and his family, including wife Alejandra Silva, would be in their new home in Spain, where she is from.

“My wife is Spanish, and she gave me about seven years here, so we’re going to spend some years in Madrid with her family,” says Gere. “Our kids are multilingual, so they’ll thrive there.

Gere and Silva originally met in 2014 at a hotel in Positano, Italy, and married in May 2018. They went on to have two boys, Alexander, five, and James, four.

Silva, 41, has an 11-year-old son named Albert with her ex-husband Govind Friedland, while Gere’s lone child with second wife Carey Lowell is Homer, born in 2000.
