On May 13, 2025, during the 78th Cannes Film Festival’s opening ceremony, the iconic actor, director, and producer received a coveted honorary Palme d’Or for lifetime achievement at the age of 87. But De Niro didn’t just take the trophy quietly; he utilized the limelight to convey a message that astounded the crowd.
The Deer Hunter legend made an impression on the red carpet, coming with his 45-year-old girlfriend, Tiffany Chen. His daughter, Helen Grace, also attended the milestone ceremony with the pair.
Leonardo DiCaprio presented the prize—a full circle event, as De Niro had previously served as jury president at the same festival 14 years before, in 2011.

“America’s philistine president…”
He began by declaring, “In my country, we are fighting like [expletive] for the democracy we once took for granted.” He went on to say, “That affects all of us here because the arts are democratic.”
Turning his attention to the present US administration, De Niro severely attacked President Trump’s recent actions.
“America’s philistine president has had himself appointed head of one of our premier cultural institutions,” he remarked, alluding to Trump’s choice to chair the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
“We can’t just all sit back and watch.”
The Goodfellas star also criticized Trump’s recent tariff proposal, saying, “He has cut funding and support for the arts, humanities, and education, and now he has announced a 100% tariff on films produced outside the United States.” After allowing the words to soak in, he informed the audience, “Let that sink in for a minute.”
De Niro described the situation as deplorable, emphasizing its global consequences.
“All of these assaults are reprehensible. And this isn’t just an American problem; it’s a global one,” he explained.
He concluded his statement with a strong appeal to action: “Like a film, we can’t just sit back and watch. We must act immediately, without violence, but with enormous passion and resolve. Everyone who values liberty should organize, demonstrate, and participate in elections.
