Sandra Oh gives a final answer on whether she will return to her Grey’s Anatomy role as Cristina Yang or not

Paging Dr. Cristina Yang.

Sandra Oh chatted with The Interview co-host Lulu Garcia-Navarro on June 12 at the Indeed Theater at Spring Studios about whether the award-winning actress will return as the doctor on Grey’s Anatomy 11 years after her leave.

“Now that I’ve been away from the show for ten years, I’ve realized how much I love the people who adore Cristina. It is that affection that has made me say, “Oh, the fans really, really, really want it,” and that’s when I began to open up about the notion, “Oh,” 53 says.

“But, in my opinion, to be true to those who enjoy your work, you must first be true to yourself.” So, at this moment, I don’t believe so.

Oh, who received five Emmy nominations and a Golden Globe for her performance on Grey’s Anatomy, hasn’t returned to the program since leaving in 2014 and has been hesitant to bring the character back throughout the years.

However, the persona has continued to appear in the plot through onscreen references, phone conversations, and textual interaction with other characters. Dr. Yang made an appearance to support her closest friend, Meredith Grey, portrayed by Ellen Pompeo, at the burial of her husband, Derek Shepherd, played by Patrick Dempsey, albeit a body double for Oh was used in the event.

Oh was one of the initial cast members of Grey’s Anatomy when the series debuted in 2005, with Pompeo, Katherine Heigl, Justin Chambers, T.R. Knight, Chandra Wilson, James Pickens Jr., Isaiah Washington, and Dempsey.

Since leaving Grey’s Anatomy, Oh has had prominent parts in American Crime, The Chair, Invincible, and Killing Eve, the latter of which garnered her a Golden Globe for her depiction of Eve Polastri.

She has also appeared in films such as Catfight, Raya and the Last Dragon, Turning Red, Umma, and Quiz Lady, for which she received an Emmy.

Grey’s Anatomy, the longest-running primetime medical drama in television history, has finished its 21st season and will return for season 22 on ABC this autumn.
