The allegations were published today (September 26) by Spanish prosecutors after the singer was originally accused last year of cheating the Spanish tax office of €14.5 million ($15.3 million) on revenue made between 2012 and 2014.

Shakira, whose full name is Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll, is scheduled to stand trial in Barcelona on November 20 on those charges, but she’s now been accused a second time, with prosecutors alleging she failed to pay €6.7 million ($7.1 million) in tax on her 2018 earnings.

Spanish tax authorities launched the current case against Shakira in July and decided to prosecute her after gathering evidence for two months.

Barcelona prosecutors stated in a statement regarding the allegations that the ‘Wherever, Whenever’ singer was suspected of using an offshore corporation situated in a tax haven to avoid paying taxes.

The accusations have been served on Shakira, who currently resides in Miami, Florida, according to the statement.

Llorente y Cuenca, the public relations agency that previously managed Shakira’s affairs, had no quick comment, despite earlier claiming Shakira had “always acted in accordance with the law and on the advice of her financial advisers.”

A trial date for the additional charges has not been scheduled.

When Shakira was originally charged last year, prosecutors in Barcelona said she spent more than half of the 2012–14 fiscal year in Spain and so should have paid taxes in the nation, despite her official residency being in the Bahamas.

Since she began dating now-retired footballer Gerard Pique 11 years ago, the singer has been associated with Spain.

Shakira and Pique had two children and lived together in Barcelona until last year, when they chose to split up.

The allegations come as Spanish tax authorities continue to push down on tax evasion.

Authorities have concentrated their attention over the last decade on football players such as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo for failing to pay their full tax obligations.

Both prominent football players were convicted of tax evasion, but they avoided prison time because of a clause that permits a judge to commute penalties of less than two years for first-time offenders.

If Shakira is found guilty of the prior charges, she faces an eight-year jail sentence plus a huge fine, meaning she might face a harsher punishment as a result of the newly added charges.
