Shaun White and Nina Dobrev have ended their engagement and split after being together for five years. Details revealed…

Shaun White and Nina Dobrev are going their own ways.

PEOPLE can exclusively report that the champion snowboarder, 39, and The Vampire Diaries actress, 36, have broken their engagement and split after five years together.

A source close to the couple said, “It was a mutual decision, and it wasn’t an easy one, but it was made with love and deep respect for one another.”

Representatives for White and Dobrev did not reply to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

White and Dobrev were last seen together on August 31, 2025, in Los Angeles, holding hands and conducting errands.

However, on September 7, Dobrev graced the red carpet for the Eternity premiere at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival sans her 5-carat diamond engagement ring. She has also unpinned her engagement post, which has remained at the top of her Instagram since White proposed in October 2024.

The couple met briefly at an awards presentation in 2012 but did not get acquainted until 2019, when they were both hired as speakers at an event in Florida hosted by motivational speaker Tony Robbins.

Recalling the post-event supper, the three-time Olympic gold winner told PEOPLE in January 2022 that he “actually didn’t know anything about [Dobrev]” at the time. However, he was fascinated when numerous staff members sought a photo with her. “I was like, ‘What’s going on?’ “What’s going on?” “It was actually very funny,” he remembered.

The pair began dating in 2019 and moved in together just before the COVID-19 epidemic began. White made their relationship Instagram public in May 2020, with a series of photos of Dobrev giving him a quarantine haircut.

White told PEOPLE that their time together helped them bond. “Nina’s just been so supportive and so amazing through this whole process for me,” he told me. “Through the pandemic, she was a lifesaver—she really made that time in my life special.”

Throughout their relationship, the athlete and Degrassi star were regulars on red carpets. They frequently revealed glimpses of their lives together on social media, including trips overseas and evenings at Coachella. In 2022, Dobrev accompanied White to his fifth and final Winter Olympics in Beijing, which he subsequently described as “emotional” and “overwhelming.”

Before the event, he hinted at a possible engagement to Dobrev when speaking with PEOPLE at Oasis Celsius Vibe House.

“We’re simply enjoying our time together right now. He responded, “No pressure.”” However, I told her, ‘Look, after the Olympics, I will finally have the freedom to do anything.’ And let’s just have fun, be together, and support one another.

“But, you never know. “We’ll see what happens,” he explained at the time.

White proposed to Dobrev in October 2024 over a surprise dinner at The Golden Swan in New York City. He planned the proposal by informing her that they were going to a CFDA/Vogue event hosted by Anna Wintour before popping the question with a 5-carat Lorraine Schwartz diamond ring.

The couple posted photographs of their momentous night, with White commenting on Instagram, “She said YES 💍♾️.”

“RIP boyfriend, hello fiancé,” Dobrev captioned her image.
