Sometimes, being in the right place at the right moment is insufficient to set things right. It often requires guts to show that you are willing to speak up for people in need and the vulnerable…

Being in the right place at the right time doesn’t always solve issues. Demonstrating a willingness to speak out for those in need often requires courage.

For these four teenage boys, what seemed like an ordinary night out turned into an extraordinary event. While skating in an underground parking lot, Arnaud Nimenya, Carsyn Wright, James Hielema, and Starlyn Rives-Perez noticed something unusual. An older, well-dressed man was escorting a young girl, about fifteen years old, who appeared to be highly intoxicated. This alarmed the boys, as they suspected something was wrong. The girl’s condition was visibly concerning—she was disoriented and distressed. One of the boys recalled her being so intoxicated that “she was screaming and yelling.” She seemed desperate to get away, looking disheveled and injured.

When the boys approached, the man claimed to be the girl’s father, attempting to dismiss their concerns. Unsure of how to proceed and hesitant to interfere, they initially stepped back, especially since the girl said nothing.

“It’s important not to jump to conclusions in situations like this,” Wright later reflected. “You just hope for the best and try not to assume the worst.”

However, the boys couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off. Trusting their instincts, they decided to return and check on the girl.

Their decision ended up saving her life.

When they came back, they were shocked to witness a horrific scene: the man was abusing the young woman.

“Seeing something like that as soon as you walk in makes you freeze,” Nimenya recalled. “You don’t know what to do at first.”

Despite their initial shock, the boys quickly sprang into action, chasing after the man as he tried to flee the parking lot.

“He was trying to get away from us,” Nimenya said. “But I thought, ‘We can stop this,’ even when he pushed me out of the way.”

Determined to stop him, the boys continued their pursuit. The man attempted to fight back, using one of their skateboards as a weapon, which led to a physical confrontation. Fortunately, the police arrived just in time to apprehend him.

The boys felt a sense of relief knowing that the young woman was now safe. Their heroic actions did not go unnoticed; the police honored them by inviting them to the Chief’s Awards Gala, where they were publicly recognized for their bravery.

The way these young men responded to such a dire situation is truly inspiring. They risked their own safety to protect someone vulnerable, proving themselves to be true heroes and role models.
