Despite physicians’ warnings, Sophia Loren and her devoted husband, Carlo Ponti, were blessed with two children. Until his death, the pair had been married for four decades.
Loren opened up about her relationship with Ponti in a September 2019 interview. When asked what the key to their relationship’s longevity was, she responded that there was none.
“We both fell in love at first sight. “We met when I was 16 at a beauty pageant in Rome, and he was on the jury,” the Italian actress recalled. Loren revealed that the Italian film producer noticed her seated with friends and gave her a note inviting her to compete.
She did, and she came in second place in the competition. Loren revealed that her connection with Ponti began as “friendly” and that they did not have a serious relationship until she was 19 years old. “We genuinely loved each other,” she said.
During an October 2017 interview, Loren was asked if she ever fell in love on set, and she said, “Maybe little infatuations, but falling in love is quite another thing. Perhaps you only fall in love once in your life.”
Loren stated she feels rewards are merited when asked when she recognized her life would become special. “Every reward is the result of hard work, dedication, and sacrifice. And tenacity,” the Hollywood actor added. She disclosed, for example:
“An Italian doctor told me that I couldn’t have children.” I always disagreed, and he was eventually proven incorrect. I was always opposed.”
Loren and Ponti married in April 1966 and had their first child two years later. Carlo Ponti Jr., their first kid, was born in December 1968, and Edoardo Ponti, their youngest son, was born five years later, in January 1973.
Ponti died in Geneva, Switzerland, in January 2007, after being married for 41 years. Loren never remarried and is still a widow.
Loren has subsequently opted to live her life away from the spotlight, settling in Geneva, her beloved city and the birthplace of her children. She has four grandkids, whom she describes as the “most beautiful grandchildren” she has ever seen in her life, in addition to her children.
Carlo Jr., Loren’s eldest son, has two children with his longtime wife, Andrea Meszaros Ponti, whom he married in 2004. Edoardo, her second kid, is himself a father of two, Lucia and Leonardo, whom he shares with his wife, “NCIS” veteran Sasha Alexander. They tied the knot in 2007.
When asked how she spends her life now, the Oscar winner said she strives to do something great every day, not just for herself but also for the people around her. She keeps it simple by savoring the wonderful news her children share about their lives with her.
“The beauty of my grandchildren brings me joy, even though they are far away in California,” Loren stated in 2019. When asked what lessons she would like them and her children to learn from her life, the actress said, That’s what makes my life worthwhile. Above all, she values her family.

The proud, loving mother of two kids stated that her sons are gifted, respectful to their parents, and have strong morals. According to her, they turned out fine.
Loren has also spoken frankly about aging, stating that she feels happiness is the key to aging gracefully. “Life is what it is. You should enjoy your time here, and aging is a natural part of that. “So, enjoy it as well,” she said.
The “Sunflower” actress is said to be surrounded by old friends who see her and look after her while she is away from her children and their families.
The family grandmother, who claims to be happy and living a good life, keeps herself occupied by gardening, reading, and taking long walks. In March 2016, Loren stated, “I live for my family.”
Loren recently appeared in a family portrait for the first time when attending her daughter-in-law Alexander’s 50th birthday party. The actress captioned numerous photos from her wedding day, “Geneva in the spring.”
Her renowned mother-in-law was seen in a blue suit with a white top underneath, proudly standing with her and her two boys.
Fans were ecstatic to see Loren, 88, in the photo, as some had been wondering about her because she now lives a low-key existence. In the comments area, they gushed about her.
