Story of the Day: 4 veterans will remember this day forever…

These ‘super seniors’ have finally received their diplomas, and congratulations are in order! A diploma holds immense symbolic value for individuals, but gratitude for it can sometimes be challenging when it’s already in hand. On the contrary, veterans make significant sacrifices when they enlist in the military, and finding ways to compensate for lost life experiences can be meaningful.

In 1956, four young men from Springdale High School had to forego their high school graduation. Air Force Veteran Carl Stults, Army Veteran Bobby Burke, Air Force Veteran Charles Leroy Moon, and Air Force Veteran Bob Self were once students at Springdale High School. However, by their senior year, they had already made the decision to venture far from their hometown.

Opting to enroll in the military, they took GED tests before graduation to enlist and embarked on journeys to distant places before having the chance to walk across the stage and shake hands with their principal. While building careers in the military, they always felt a sense of incompleteness.

Moon, Burke, Self, and Stults had the opportunity to travel to places for work that would have otherwise been inaccessible. Their assignments took them to countries like the Philippines and Hong Kong, providing them with valuable insights into the world. Despite their adventures, they never lost touch with their roots and eventually returned home to Springdale, Arkansas.

In retirement, the four men regularly gather at a local cafe in their hometown. It was during one of these get-togethers at the Wagon Wheel Cafe that they crossed paths with a group of present-day Springdale High School teachers.
