A British university student, Aditya Verma, found himself in trouble after a Snapchat message intended as a private joke among friends sparked concerns and intervention from both Spanish and British security services. The 18-year-old student’s message, “On my way to blow up the plane (I’m a member of the Taliban),” was flagged by UK security services, who promptly shared it with Spanish authorities as Verma’s flight to Menorca was still in the air.

While Verma defended the message as a private joke meant for friends he was traveling with, Spanish defense authorities responded by scrambling two F-18 fighter jets to flank the aircraft. The incident, while not resulting in terrorism charges or a jail sentence for Verma, could lead to a hefty fine of up to €22,500 ($24,409) if he is found guilty of public disorder. Additionally, the Spanish defense ministry is seeking €95,000 ($103,062) in expenses.

During the court hearing, Verma expressed regret for the situation, explaining that he thought the fighter jets were part of a military exercise related to the Russia-Ukraine war. He clarified that the pilot later announced that the jets were scrambled due to a distress signal sent in error. Verma’s phone and internet history were scrutinized by authorities, revealing previous research on clashes between Pakistan and India and possibilities of an Islamic State attack in the area. However, officials found nothing linking Verma to jihadist radicalism.

Verma apologized for the incident, describing it as a “moment of madness” and expressing remorse for any trouble caused. The verdict in his case is expected in the coming days.
