The Chinese zoo disputes that it gave the lion a fringe haircut

Authorities at the Guangzhou Zoo in southern China have come under fire for allegedly “botching” the animal’s unusual appearance due to a lion’s new hairstyle.

Zookeepers have faced criticism for allegedly giving the white lion a haircut after discovering it with a fringe at the weekend. Officials claimed that the lion’s new hairdo was the result of heat and humidity rather than cutting the animal’s mane.

In 2015, the zoo transported the male lion, known as A Hang, from Hangzhou in the Zhejiang province of eastern China.

Hang’s hair grows naturally, and the extreme humidity in Guangzhou is causing it to droop, according to a zoo employee.

“The zoo does not offer a hairdressing program, and we would never cut the hair of a lion.” You could say that he “created” the hairdo on his own,” they told Global Times, a Chinese state media outlet.

The excessive humidity in Guangzhou made him look like a blonde beauty with fringe, according to officials who spoke with Viral Press.

They said the lion most likely brushed itself in the heat by licking its paws and then pawing its fur, which may have caused the straightened appearance. They said that since they were terrified, zoo staff did not trim the animal’s mane.

The animal did not have a fringe when the user claimed to have spotted it less than a week ago on the Chinese social media platform Xiaohongshu.

After a person published pictures of the lion’s mullet-style fringe on social media on Sunday, the images quickly went viral. The individual had visited the zoo.
