Joel and Carolyn LaPray share a love story that is truly exceptional, and their enduring commitment to each other serves as an inspiration. Having been happily married for an impressive 64 years, they have actually known each other for a remarkable 82 years.

Their journey began as toddlers in Idaho during the early 1940s when they were neighbors, and their parents were friends. This connection, forged in childhood, persisted even when both families moved due to World War II. It wasn’t until their teenage years, upon reuniting in Utah, that Joel and Carolyn’s romance truly blossomed.

During their high school Sophomore year, Joel invited Carolyn to the military ball, although her feelings towards him were initially uncertain. However, Joel’s conviction that she would be the woman he would marry proved true. As they spent more time together during their senior year, their love deepened, leading to a commitment that endured beyond their graduation.

Embarking on their journey together, Joel and Carolyn attended Utah State University and, after their first year of college, decided to tie the knot. Six decades later, their love story remains beautiful and steadfast, marked by the joys of raising six children, 25 grandchildren, and 33 great-grandchildren—a grand total of 70 family members!

Their enduring love is commemorated by a black-and-white picture of them as toddlers, a snapshot from when they first met, which Joel’s mother had painted as a wedding present. Positioned near their wedding cake, it is labeled “Joel and Carolyn, their first date.”

When asked about the secret to their enduring marriage, Joel emphasized compromise, acknowledging that differing opinions are resolved through a willingness to meet halfway. Carolyn humorously alluded to the notion of a “happy wife, happy life,” and Joel, in demonstrating his love, strives to ensure Carolyn’s happiness, recognizing that it translates to the well-being of the entire family.
