The deputy saved his wife by moving her out of the way of the disaster

Life comes at you suddenly. You never know what each day will bring. A vehicle sped towards a young couple who were on the side of the road.

The quick-thinking husband shoved his wife out of danger, ultimately saving her life. However, he did not have much luck.

Raymond Surber, 31, was off duty and driving his 2017 Chevrolet Silverado on August 1 when he collided with a young couple on the side of the road. Surber collided with ACSO Reserve Deputies Lucas and Nicole Shoffner, who were on the side of the road, attempting to repair a dirt bike.

The collision occurred at around 11:17 p.m. Both husband and wife were hurt in the incident, although Lucas had more severe injuries.

Matt Fagiana, who works for the Law Enforcement Executive Development Association, told the public that Lucas slammed his wife to the side, causing more serious injuries. Fagiana believes Lucas’ bold acts saved his wife’s life.

“Let’s begin praying for our buddy. If anyone deserves a second shot in life, it’s this person.” Fagiana described him as kind, loyal, funny, and incredibly strong. “You got this, Lucas, and we are behind you and Nicole every step of the way.”

Nicole underwent a head CT scan and x-rays at Fort Sanders. Major head injuries sent Lucas to the Transplant Intensive Care Unit at the UT Medical Center for treatment. They threw Lucas into a medically induced coma. Soon after, they weaned him off the paralytic, but he remained comatose.

His wife Nicole suffered minimal injuries compared to her husband Lucas. She was rallying behind him and supporting him through every stage of his recuperation. Their friends started a GoFundMe campaign to aid the couple with their medical expenditures.

They set a $100,000 goal and raised nearly $93,000. Nicole thanked everyone who donated and assisted them, including those who are praying for the young couple’s health.

After waking from his coma for 23 days, physicians diagnosed Lucas as on the mend. Lucas is reportedly on his way to a rehabilitation facility in Atlanta to complete his treatment.

According to Nicole’s Instagram stories, Lucas’ rehabilitation appears to be doing nicely. The ASCO deputy recently walked 200 steps at the rehabilitation center, which pleased his wife and delighted many others in their life.

Lucas pushed his wife out of the way to save her life and sustained life-threatening injuries as a result. That is true love; a love that makes someone selfless.
