Simon Marks, 37, made an incredible discovery when he assumed his automobile had drifted into a flowerbed, only to discover a buried piece of history beneath his driveway. While assessing the damage to his automobile, a curious noise attracted his interest, leading to an unexpected discovery.

A mysterious discovery

As Simon crouched to investigate fractures in the driveway pavers, he observed the earth underneath him beginning to give way. The pavers continued to move, making unsettling noises and hinting at something hidden below.

Simon was intrigued and discovered a piece of metal hidden under the earth. He immediately recognized the object securely embedded beneath the surface, despite his efforts to collect it by hand.

Simon, determined to learn more, enlisted his father’s assistance. They painstakingly removed buckets of muck, revealing an entrance and a rusted ladder leading down into the ground.

Unveiling a Forgotten Past

As Simon and his father descended the ladder, they made a remarkable discovery: a World War II air raid shelter. Further investigation revealed that similar subterranean shelters were constructed during the war to shield residents from bombardment.

According to Simon, previous owners filled in the shelter while building the house and garden. Probably during the building phase, someone bricked up one of the shelter’s walls.

“If that’s the case, we’ll just leave it as is,” Simon said. However, word of the discovery spread quickly, rekindling interest in the neglected artifact.

Inspired by their discovery, Simon and his father began trying to repair the air raid bunker. They regard the shelter as an invaluable historical artifact, a palpable connection to the past that demands respect.
