The devil is in the details, as the old phrase goes. Listening to individuals who are older and wiser than us allows us to learn and grow, obtaining experience that we would not otherwise have.

Nurses encounter some of the darkest events in people’s lives practically every day. Having said that, nurses might witness more miracles than anybody else. Nurse Brandalyn Mae Porter noticed intricate detail on an elderly woman’s hands. When Brandalyn Mae Porter posted a photograph on social media, all people noticed were the hands of an elderly woman. That was until they read Brandalyn’s remarks, which changed their perspective on the hands.

More than 160,000 people shared the image.

“Today, I painted a new resident’s nails at work, and as we were discussing colors, she indicated she wanted clear. The first idea that sprang to mind was, “CLEAR?! That’s not enjoyable.”

“When I asked her why she wanted clear, she replied, ‘My hands are ugly, and I would rather not bring attention to them.’ I cautiously answered, “Your hands tell the story of your life.” They convey a narrative of love, caring, and adventure. These hands have touched and held things that most people may only hope to experience one day. With such experiences, she chose pink for her nails.
