The tourist’s camera rolls seconds before Killer Whale attacks the SeaWorld trainer

A tourist visiting SeaWorld captured footage of the tragic final moments of a trainer who was fatally dragged underwater by an Orca.

Dawn Brancheau, a 40-year-old senior trainer at SeaWorld in Orlando, Florida, regularly worked with the animals, including Tilikum, a killer whale.

Tilikum, captured at the age of two, initially appeared at Sealand of the Pacific in Vancouver, BC, before being relocated to SeaWorld in Florida. Known as one of the largest Orcas at SeaWorld, Tilikum was a significant figure in Brancheau’s career.

On February 24, 2010, during a ‘Dine with Shamu’ experience at SeaWorld, Brancheau approached Tilikum’s tank. Though she remained outside the pool, she leaned in close to the water’s edge.

In a tragic turn of events, Tilikum seized Brancheau and dragged her into the pool as she approached. Witnesses described how the whale grabbed her and violently shook her before submerging her underwater.

Despite efforts by staff to intervene, Tilikum refused to release Brancheau. Tragically, she drowned during the attack, sustaining severe injuries including the loss of an arm, a severed spinal cord, and multiple broken ribs.

Following the incident, questions arose about why Tilikum attacked Brancheau, given their reportedly positive relationship. John Hargrove, another senior trainer at SeaWorld, expressed uncertainty about Tilikum’s motives, noting the strong bond between the trainer and the whale.

After Brancheau’s death, Tilikum was relocated to a secluded pool at SeaWorld, away from public view. Throughout his time in captivity, Tilikum had been involved in two other attacks on humans.

Tilikum passed away in 2017, leaving behind a legacy marked by tragedy and questions surrounding the complex relationship between humans and captive marine mammals.
