This is the moment a dad learned that his lost kid had been discovered alive in his basement

The story of Charles Bothuell IV made headlines when he reported his son, Charles Bothuell V, missing in 2014 in Detroit. The case escalated to involve the FBI in an extensive 11-day search. However, during a live interview with Nancy Grace on HLN, it was shockingly revealed that the 12-year-old boy was found in his own father’s basement.

Stunned silence followed on air, and Charles Bothuell IV claimed that the basement had been searched multiple times by the FBI, Detroit Police, and his family. Despite media reports suggesting he knew his son was in the basement all along, Bothuell IV dismissed these claims as absurd.

Subsequent investigations revealed that the boy was not lost but had been hiding from his father and stepmother, Monique Dillard-Bothuell. The FBI’s earlier search had missed the child, suggesting he may have moved to the basement after the initial checks.

The reason for Charles Bothuell V’s hiding was later disclosed—he was scared of his father’s reaction when he realized the boy hadn’t completed his demanding exercise routine. Court documents detailed a grueling workout regimen, including 100 push-ups, 200 sit-ups, 100 jumping jacks, and other exercises.

In April 2015, Charles Bothuell IV and Monique Dillard-Bothuell were arrested and charged with torture and second-degree child abuse. The torture charge was eventually dismissed. In the trial, Bothuell IV pleaded guilty to fourth-degree child abuse, admitting to beating his son with a PVC pipe. He received 18 months of probation, mandatory anger management classes, and lost custody of his son.

Monique Dillard-Bothuell reportedly accepted a plea deal as well, although the specific details were not disclosed publicly.
