How do you find a special gift for someone you’ve been married to for 50 years? This was the question on Lee Wilson’s mind as his milestone anniversary approached. Lee, a farmer in Kansas, and his wife Renee first crossed paths in high school, although they didn’t start dating immediately, as she couldn’t date until she turned 16.
Once Renee’s birthday arrived, Lee made his move, and their first date at a roller skating party marked the beginning of a lifelong journey together. Reflecting on their decades of love, Lee felt the need to do something extraordinary for their golden anniversary.

The perfect idea struck him – he would plant acres of Renee’s favorite flower. “I put a lot of thought into it, and she always liked sunflowers,” Lee explained. “And I thought this is the year to plant sunflowers, so I planted her 80 acres of sunflowers.”
Since May, Lee, with the assistance of their son, has been secretly cultivating these beautiful flowers. Just a week away from their August 10th anniversary, approximately 1.2 million sunflowers are now in full bloom, all dedicated to Renee.

“It made me feel very special,” Renee shared. “It couldn’t have been a more perfect anniversary gift than a field of sunflowers.” In a heartwarming moment, Lee and Renee stand together in the sunflower-filled field, smiles on their faces and Lee’s arm around Renee’s shoulder.
While the sunflowers were initially intended for Renee, their breathtaking beauty has attracted visitors from across Kansas. Despite the joy this experience brought, Lee doesn’t anticipate repeating it next year. Nevertheless, he encourages others to consider this charming and unique gift idea, saying, “Oh, it’s been fun, but I think one time is enough for us. It’s somebody else’s turn next year.”
