Today, when we were waiting at a stoplight in uptown Lexington, Gracie, and Gaven noticed a man sitting alone, staring down with his head in his hands. Gracie remarked gently, “Mommy and Daddy, that man looks really sad.” Andy and I explained that he may be praying, feeling sick, or simply taking a minute to himself. They both insisted on sharing their leftover cookies, chips, and drinks from earlier when Daddy was mowing. Just as we were waiting for the light to change, the man walked in front of us.
Andy called out to him, asking if he could wait in the Compare Foods parking lot while our kids gave him something. We felt Gracie and Gaven might really brighten his day. When we got into the parking lot, he was waiting for us. Andy introduced our family, and then the man introduced himself. Gracie and Gaven gave him their food and drinks, stating they wanted him to enjoy them. He kindly accepted and warmly thanked them and us.

He said that he was homeless and that today had been extremely difficult for him, but it was heartening to know that helpful people still exist. When my husband inquired whether he had a blanket, he pointed to a nearby church, saying that his blanket was beneath the table where he sleeps.
I tried to fight back tears as I inquired whether he had considered staying at a homeless shelter. He informed us that the shelter was congested, but he is a survivor and believes in God. As we were about to say goodbye, he thanked us again. Grace and Gaven wanted to take a picture with him, and that moment impacted us deeply. We shall always be grateful for our numerous blessings.
