Tom Cruise, Val Kilmer’s longtime buddy, sobbed when they met, and the A-list actor encouraged his mate to reprise his role as Iceman in “Top Gun: Maverick”

Val Kilmer had numerous popular movies in the 1990s, including “Batman Forever,” “Top Gun,” “Heat,” and “Tombstone.” These films grossed nearly $2 billion worldwide, and Kilmer’s role in them was one of the reasons.

Years later, fans were astonished to learn that the actor had been discreetly fighting throat cancer for years. He had to get a tracheotomy, which made it very hard for him to talk.

Kilmer was initially hesitant to seek medical assistance for his cancer. His children persuaded him, and he had numerous rounds of chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery.

Kilmer recovered completely from his cancer and entered remission as a result of the treatment. However, his surgeries left him with a tracheostomy tube and a feeding tube, preventing him from speaking and eating normally.

Despite the obstacles, Kilmer was determined to succeed. In an incredible achievement, he returned to the film business in “Top Gun: Maverick,” reprising his role as Iceman with his longtime buddy, Tom Cruise.

From 2015 to 2017, the actor battled a deadly disease. He kept his troubles quiet, not disclosing to his followers that he was suffering from a terrible illness.

Despite his buddy Michael Douglas hinting he had cancer at an event he attended, he originally denied having throat cancer. Douglas even told the press that his actor pal was struggling.

Kilmer chose to speak out after learning that Douglas had revealed his illness. Kilmer eventually confessed to what had happened to him in 2017.

He mentioned that it had been years since he had seen Douglas and that they had discussed seeking a diagnostic for the lump in Kilmer’s throat at the time. The actor was confused about where Douglas received his news, so he summoned a buddy to meet with him so he could learn the truth about Kilmer’s condition.

The “Tombstone” actor assured fans that he sounded far worse than he felt. He was in good spirits and eager to live life to the fullest.

A journalist described Kilmer’s new voice as “somewhere between a squeak and a voiceless roar.” While Kilmer’s rich, strong voice has faded, he is still the same person.

Despite losing his capacity to eat and communicate, Kilmer still feels very much like himself. In response, he stated:

“I still feel like the same person. The same creative spirit remains. A spirit that boldly envisions thoughts and stories, but now I can express myself again, offers these ideas to you, and show you this side of me. A piece that was never fully lost. “I’m just hiding.”

Kilmer now speaks using Sonatic, an artificial intelligence software. It reproduced his voice using ancient audio recordings, allowing people to understand him as they once did.

The show had its film premiere in “Top Gun: Maverick,” with Kilmer’s character, Tom, conversing with Tom Cruise’s Pete Mitchell. Fans may anticipate Kilmer using the same program in future films.

Given his limitations, Kilmer hasn’t had much luck landing projects, but the company to which he has devoted a large portion of his life hasn’t completely abandoned him. The actor just released “Val,” a documentary on his life that delves into his work, personal life, and recovery journey.

Mercedes and Jack, his two adult children, were there for him during the filming. They couldn’t be more proud of their father’s determination to improve and overcome his earlier cancer diagnosis.

Mercedes, who co-starred with her father in the 2020 film “Paydirt,” was astounded to reflect on her father’s wonderful life. She’s delighted that his followers will be able to see him for the first time through the documentary.

Cruise, Kilmer’s close friend, also persuaded him to reprise his role as Tom “Iceman” Kazansky in the “Top Gun” trilogy. It was a personal invitation from an old friend that was too nice to turn down.

Kilmer played a key role in the original “Top Gun” film, which was a box-office success. It was an iconic pop culture favorite that people still turn to for references today. So, when “Top Gun: Maverick” was in the works, Cruise said unequivocally that he would not do the film unless Kilmer was present.

Kilmer was overjoyed when the filmmakers asked him to join the picture. He ultimately collaborated with them on the screenplay and filmed for a day.

Cruise admitted that working with Kilmer got him upset once again. He knew what Kilmer was capable of because they’d known each other for decades. He was able to play his part as if the original “Top Gun” film hadn’t been decades old. “He’s such a powerful actor, he instantly became that character again,” Cruise said.

In the film, Kilmer and Cruise exchange an emotional encounter. While it was brief, Kilmer’s skill came through despite his inability to speak. He interacted with Cruise’s character through a computer but said a line using artificial intelligence.

The incident visibly moved Cruise. He wasn’t afraid to acknowledge that he was emotional because he admired his excellent friend so much.

Even during the original “Top Gun” film, Cruise insisted on Kilmer making the cut. He is full of praise for his co-star, calling him “brilliant.”

Despite the fact that the original “Top Gun” film was released 36 years ago, the friendship between Cruise and Kilmer remains unique. The co-stars are three years apart in age, with Cruise looking up to Kilmer with adoration.

While the first film pitted Kilmer and Cruise against one another, the second provided a fitting conclusion to the difficult history both of their characters shared. Maverick’s buddy and valued counselor were now the Iceman.

Joseph Kosinski, the film’s director, witnessed both actors sobbing after one of their two takes.

Despite the film’s exciting action sequences, many viewers preferred the moment in which Cruise visited Kilmer. Although the on-screen reunion was heartbreaking, Kilmer acknowledged that an off-screen reunion was unnecessary for him and his dear pal.

“Every year, we keep in touch and exchange Christmas gifts!” the “Batman” star said. He also claimed that he was heavily engaged in the plot of “Top Gun: Maverick,” as he and Cruise discussed what they thought was best for the tale.

“I think they got it right at the end,” he stated, praising the second film’s makers. They only shot his sequence twice: once in San Diego and once during a costume change.

Nothing was more real than Kilmer and Cruise’s admiration for one another. Joseph Kosinski, the film’s director, witnessed both actors sobbing after one of their two takes.

“It felt like it was a genuine moment between two old friends,” he said. Despite being unable to speak, Kilmer was able to represent Iceman with such strength and expression that it appeared as though nothing had changed.

The filmmaker hailed Cruise and Kilmer as “two actors at the pinnacle of their careers.” Rather than directing them so severely, he let them move at their own pace and gave them the liberty to do what they pleased.

Despite their intense emotions, the two stars joked and swapped amusing anecdotes off-screen as if no time had passed. They shot “Top Gun” during a time when they were both still trying to make it and competing with one another.

Through it all, Kilmer and Cruise formed a lifelong relationship full of love and adoration. They get along well and “giggled like little kids in school” when the camera wasn’t on them.

Kilmer didn’t hold back when asked to explain their bond. He had this to say about Cruise:

“I consider him to be a true friend.” We discussed personal tales and challenges from our various lifestyles.”

Kilmer is still active on social media, where he has made several tributes to his pal throughout the years. When “Top Gun: Maverick” premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, he tweeted congratulations to his “old pal.”

In another well-received tweet, he included a still from their most recent scene and added, “36 years later… I’m still your wingman.” The image received over 109,000 likes and 3,800 comments on Instagram, with people praising their connection.

Kilmer is looking forward to enjoying his best life right now. He still has not completed his professional objectives, which include playing Frankenstein in a Werner Herzog film. He also founded Kamp Kilmer, a place where aspiring artists can study and share their talents with others.

Kilmer is grateful for his devoted fan following, adding that he receives hundreds of fan emails each week. The response he received following the release of “Top Gun: Maverick” has been humbling, and he can’t wait to show them more of what he has in him.
