When two Idaho sheriff’s officers stopped for a bite to eat, they expected to be in and out of the restaurant quickly.
That all changed when their server decided to leave them a surprise letter.
The server opted to pay up their bill as well, as she disclosed in a heartfelt thank-you email to the deputies who were anticipating their money.

The thank-you message from their waiter, who gladly covered the bill for their meal, moved the deputies, and they weren’t alone. Their coworkers were apparently affected by the gesture as well, leading the sheriff’s office to compose a “note” of their own. The deputies’ supervisor expressed their thanks on social media, posting a photograph of the server’s wonderful deed.

Of course, the nice act was praised as an “awesome way to pay it forward” by social media users, demonstrating that it’s the simple things that make a difference. And it’s no surprise that such a simple thing has such a large impact because it’s a welcome diversion from the sad tales that too often dominate our headlines concerning law enforcement personnel and the scrutiny, prejudice, and even violence they frequently experience.
When a cop can’t even get a drink without fear of the person behind the counter fouling it in some obscene or disrespectful way, it’s nice to know that there are plenty of members of the public and the food service industry who recognize that the vast majority of police officers are actually kind, compassionate, and caring people who want to do their job—and get home safely.
When the people you are defending and serving despise you, it must be difficult to protect and serve them not to mention the anxiety of not knowing whether someone with an anti-cop attitude may attack you. Receiving a reminder that there are people who respect your willingness to put your life on the line for others must bring some solace.
Perhaps we can all learn from this waitress and remember to be more grateful to those who keep our towns secure. It’s a difficult profession that rarely receives the recognition it deserves. Congratulations to the brave men and women ready to suit up and do it—and a heartfelt thank you to those who step forward to express their support.
