Video of the massive reptile has gone viral on social media

In North Port, Florida, a video of a five-foot-long lizard strolling along a busy road went viral earlier this month.

The Miami Herald reported that the lizard, likely an Asian water monitor, is considered an invasive species. Typically ranging from four to six feet long, they can grow up to 10 feet in length.

The video, captured by Renee Aland along Hillsborough Boulevard during a drive with her daughter, Zoey Marzonie, was shared on Facebook on May 20. Aland mentioned doing a double take while driving and reported the sighting to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Aland described the encounter, noting the lizard’s approximate length and the location of the sighting behind the Kia dealership.

In one Facebook video, Aland can be heard expressing surprise at the lizard’s nonchalant walk across the road. She cautions her daughter against getting closer to the lizard.

Aland admitted to initially thinking her eyes were deceiving her and found it challenging to capture evidence for the FFWCC. She was surprised when the reptile reappeared for her video.

She observed the lizard’s attempts to cross the road multiple times, emphasizing the potential danger to cars.

While FFWCC officials couldn’t definitively confirm the lizard’s identity from the video, they’re monitoring sightings to determine potential response efforts.

Encountering an Asian water monitor lizard? Report it to the invasive species hotline at 888-IVE-GOT1, advises the FFWCC.
