It’s less than a fortnight until Christmas, and if you haven’t indulged in the holiday classic Home Alone yet, then seriously, what have you been up to?
For those of us who haven’t committed any crimes, a TikTok video by creator Ivan Mars recently shed some light on the mystery of why poor Kevin McCallister was left behind in the first film.

For the very few unfamiliar with the iconic movie, the initial installment follows Kevin, who is accidentally left home alone and must defend his residence against burglars Marv and Harry while the McCallisters are on vacation.
While it may just be a film, many have pondered over the years how Kevin’s parents could have left their young son behind.
The most apparent answer that comes to mind is that Kevin got into trouble the night before their flight to France and was sent to sleep in the loft by himself as punishment. Then, during the night, a storm caused a power outage in the McCallister home, resetting all their alarm clocks.

When the airport taxi service knocked on the door, the family hurriedly prepared for their trip. Kevin’s mom, Catherine, asked her niece Heather to perform a headcount of the children. Heather’s count went awry due to two individuals.
Firstly, Kevin’s older brother Buzz, who tried to confuse Heather by shouting random numbers. And secondly, Mitch Murphy, the McCallisters’ neighbor, a boy of Kevin’s age who came to chat with the kids before their holiday. Heather mistakenly counted him, only seeing the back of his head.
When it seemed they had everyone, the family rushed off to the airport and headed to Paris. However, questions arise. Wouldn’t the McCallisters have had a spare plane ticket during check-in? Shouldn’t that have alerted them that Kevin was missing? There are numerous questions and few answers.

This is where the less obvious detail comes into play—a fleeting moment that many Home Alone fans had never noticed before. The night before the flight, Kevin got into trouble for fighting with Buzz over eating his cheese pizza. The argument led to a liter of milk being spilled, soaking the pizza boxes, the family, and crucially, the plane tickets.
When Kevin’s dad, Peter, grabbed paper towels to clean up the mess, he accidentally threw away one of the plane tickets. This explains why the McCallisters didn’t realize Kevin was missing until they were halfway to France.
During a recent viewing of the classic ’90s film, one attentive viewer spotted this tiny detail for the first time and was amazed they had never noticed it before. “I’ve seen Home Alone ~25 times, and it wasn’t until this most recent time I realized the dad threw away a plane ticket when cleaning up spilled milk at the beginning,” they wrote. “That’s why they never had an extra ticket.”
