We might become so caught up in an actor’s portrayal that we nearly forget it’s not who they really are, especially when they use an accent.
People are frequently perplexed when they discover Sarah Lancashire does not talk like a Yorkshire copper, or when they realize Christian Bale is not American.
Another major contributor to this amount of misunderstanding is Renée Zellweger, Miss Bridget Jones herself.
Last night (January 31), during her appearance on The Graham Norton Show, her true voice left fans once again perplexed.
It’s not the first time people have forgotten that Zellweger does not talk like a real Brit who raps to ‘Jump Around’ in her London house while dressed in pajamas.
Viewers on the BBC chat show stated that hearing the star’s true accent “is like hearing Santa doesn’t exist.”
Ahead of the iconic character’s return in Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, which hits theaters on February 14, the 55-year-old spoke with Norton.
“I’ve only ever watched Renée Zellweger in her role as Bridget Jones, so I’m not accustomed to her normal accent!” One viewer wrote on X.
While many people are familiar with her portrayal of the British, the actress has a tremendous resume that includes Oscar-winning performances as Judy Garland in Judy and Roxie Hart in Chicago.

She has also appeared in Cold Mountain, Miss Potter, What If, and The Thing About Pam.
Regardless, many are still surprised when they recall (or discover for the first time) that Zellweger is truly American.
Born and reared in Texas, the BAFTA winner speaks with a distinct American accent.
“It still feels weird to me; Renée Zellweger isn’t a Brit and does the whole accent perfectly,” another person reported.
After discovering for the first time that Zellweger is a Yank, another wrote, “I’m thinking the same thing!” How did I not know?”
During last night’s broadcast, someone commented, “She seems to be more Texan than ever.”
“Renee plays with a brilliant British accent considering she’s actually American, lol,” another user said.
Despite the labeling of the new Bridget Jones film as the fourth and final installment in the series, Zellweger expressed her optimism during the premiere earlier this week.
Since the first film was released 24 years ago, the star is ‘in denial’ that it may end.
