Viral photo of gigantic football player mid-game startled people with his age

On December 16, Byron Washington from DeSoto High School played in the Texas state football championship game, and a viral photograph captured the attention of social media. The image, taken by user Will @w1llkombe and shared by Matt Stepp on X (formerly known as Twitter), shows Washington, a junior and offensive tackle, towering over another player. In the photo, Washington’s great stature is evident as he grabs the opposing player around the shoulder area, with the opponent’s head barely reaching his chest.

Social media users expressed disbelief at Washington’s height, with comments ranging from admiration to humor. Many marveled at the size difference between Washington and his opponent, prompting reactions like “That’s a really big guy there, especially compared to his opp” and “Need to see a birth certificate lol.” The image went viral, with viewers expressing astonishment at Washington’s youth.

According to Washington’s social media and Hudl profiles, he stands at 6 feet 8 inches, weighs 360 pounds, and is in the class of 2025. Some social media users were amazed to discover that Washington is only a junior and has another year of high school ahead. CBS Sports’ Barrett Sallee provided context, stating that Washington is a junior at DeSoto High School, blocking a defensive end, Kaleb Walker, who is 6 feet 3 inches and weighs 210 pounds.

Despite his impressive stature and football skills, Washington faced challenges during his growth spurt. The teenager underwent surgery due to a six-inch growth spurt during one month of sixth grade. Washington explained that his growth plates were stretching so much that metal rods were needed in his legs to provide additional support. He underwent two years of physical therapy to regain trust in his body.

Despite the difficulties, Washington’s efforts paid off, contributing to DeSoto’s victory against Summer Creek in the 6A Division II championship. The DeSoto Eagles set a new record for the most points in a 6A state championship with a total of 67. Washington has also garnered attention from colleges, receiving offers from Arizona State, Oregon, TCU, and Texas, according to his On3 profile.
