According to Insider, he and his wife, Teresa, intended to spend their retirement years driving through the gorgeous highways of the United States and Canada. Unfortunately, their search for a suitable mobile home to buy was fruitless. Clayton voiced his unhappiness, noting his difficulty in finding a mobile home that met their needs.
He expressed dissatisfaction with the constructed mobile homes, stating that they needed to seem more robust for year-round usage rather than occasional vacations. Clayton envisioned transforming a semitrailer into a living space equivalent in comfort and quality to his family’s current house on Vancouver Island. They do, however, want a long-term relationship.
He claimed that they planned to integrate solar power, water recycling, and other ecologically beneficial technology in order to reduce our carbon footprint and compensate for the truck’s fuel use. Five years ago, Clayton started restoring a “real mess” of a vehicle. Due to budgetary restrictions, Clayton was unable to acquire a new car, so he took on the task of restoring an old one.
He worked on the car’s brakes, engine, and other mechanical components for a year. In addition to the vehicle, he acquired a secondhand trailer on eBay. This blank canvas allowed him to express himself and make his idea a reality. When describing his motivation, Clayton stressed the gloomy nature of the place where he worked.
He drew out his ideas on a trusty whiteboard and made continuous modifications. Converting the semitrailer into a home was a demanding task that Clayton and his wife tackled on their own, devoting their time and energy to the project. Clayton worked on the project for five years, virtually every day.
“Most of it I did myself,” Clayton claimed, pleased with his hands-on approach. He even made his own curtains. Given the one-of-a-kind nature of their bespoke construction, he was concerned that finding a contractor who understood his specifications would be difficult, adding that “it would take longer to explain it than to actually do it.”
The COVID-19 epidemic made it more difficult to acquire materials, which was another issue. Clayton indicated that Teresa, his wife, was in charge of the assignment. The DIY mobile home makeover also came at a high cost of about $180,000.
