Identified as a Pacific footballfish, a species typically inhabiting the dark, deep ocean waters, encounters with this creature are rare for humans.
In a Facebook post by the California park, the peculiar visitor was introduced as “angler fish #2” at Crystal Cove State Park, noting that a similar angler fish of the same species had been found in May 2021, generating considerable interest among park visitors.
The recurrence of the same species, two years apart, raised intriguing questions. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife took the creature for further research, identifying it as a Pacific Football Fish.
The statement explained that there are over 200 anglerfish species globally, with only females possessing a long stalk on their heads featuring bioluminescent tips, used as a lure to attract prey in pitch-black waters at depths of up to 3,000 feet. These mysterious creatures have teeth resembling “pointed shards of glass” and cavernous mouths that allow them to consume prey as large as their own bodies.
Anglerfish exhibit remarkable sexual dimorphism, with females growing up to 24 inches long while males are only about an inch in size. Mating involves males latching onto females with their teeth, ultimately merging with the female until only their testes remain for reproduction.
Discovering these fish onshore is exceedingly rare, and the circumstances leading to their beaching remain unknown. This unusual event highlights the intriguing and enigmatic marine life concealed beneath the ocean’s surface, particularly in California’s Marine Protected Areas.
