When veteran in need of groceries turns around, he hears somebody say, “It’s our turn”

We all have bad luck and go through terrible situations in our lives. It should go without saying that when we do, we deserve the love and support of those around us to help us get back on our feet.

This is especially true for the courageous individuals who serve their country without expecting anything in return.

Unfortunately, far too many veterans continue to struggle after leaving the military. Unless a soldier has served for a specific number of years, the benefits he or she receives are sometimes insufficient to support them, and others are unsure where to turn once they arrive on Civvy Street.

Larry Robeson understands this all too well. Larry, a Vietnam veteran who could hardly afford basic essentials, was out of luck and unsure where to turn, according to reports.

However, he happened to cross paths with a Fox 5 Surprise Squad in a Las Vegas grocery store to pay for people’s food.

Despite his financial issues, Larry had gone to the supermarket with his friend Stephanie, a disabled fellow soldier. Stephanie told a Fox 5 reporter that she was buying food for herself and her dogs, but she was down to her last $50 and wasn’t sure what she was going to do next.

The Surprise Squad reporter, Dave Hall, was happy to notify Stephanie that he and his colleagues had covered her groceries, and Stephanie was overjoyed to receive the generous gesture.

Dave quickly noticed Larry, who was standing discreetly behind Stephanie. Larry, Stephanie’s husband’s buddy, had started the Bones for Blankets club many years previously. What is the club’s mission? To distribute blankets to homeless veterans who have been left on the streets after serving their country.

Larry established the charity after three other veterans died of hypothermia. He was certain that no other veterans would suffer the same fate.

Stephanie’s husband was a truck driver who was usually away from home, so he kept Stephane company and helped her get by given the challenges she had as a result of her disability, he noted.

“No veteran should be going through what she’s going through,” Larry told the Surprise Squad.

That may have been the end of it, but Dave Hall was positive that Larry wouldn’t leave the shop without the Surprise Squad team also paying for his groceries.

Larry had just meant to get dish soap and candy when Dave reminded him, “You served us. It is now our responsibility to assist you.”

So Larry was free to roam the store and buy anything he pleased. Larry was left wiping away tears as Dave and the others paid his bill, which came to $278.

“This is just overwhelming; I’ve been taking care of myself since I was 13,” Larry continued.
