Police dogs play a crucial role in law enforcement, undertaking tasks such as tracking down missing individuals. One such poignant farewell was granted to Candy, a German Shepherd and a member of the Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office since 2014. Serving as the department’s first narcotics detection dog, Candy made a significant impact during her nearly decade-long service. Over the years, she participated in over 2,900 operational searches, contributing to the seizure of 278 pounds of illegal narcotics, as reported by the sheriff’s office.

Candy shared a unique bond with her handler, Master Deputy II Anthony “Tony” Natalzia. Natalzia expressed the depth of their connection, stating, “She went everywhere with me. You see these dogs more than you see your family.”

As Candy, now 11 years old, began to show signs of slowing down, Natalzia noticed a limp and loss of appetite. A visit to the vet revealed devastating news—Candy had cancer that had spread throughout her body, rendering her condition terminal. Faced with this heartbreaking reality, Natalzia made the difficult decision to euthanize Candy.

Before the final farewell, the officers organized a ceremonial walkout for Candy at the Virginia Beach Correctional Center. In a touching display of respect, officers lined the halls, saluting the retiring K9 as she left work for the last time. Candy, clutching her favorite tennis ball, carried it along the way. The emotional send-off was a testament to the deep connection and gratitude felt by the human officers for their four-legged colleague.

Following the walkout, Natalzia drove Candy to the vet, where she peacefully crossed the rainbow bridge. Candy, who was set to retire this year, left an indelible mark on the hearts of those she served with. While Natalzia mourns the loss, he looks forward to building a new partnership with a K9 named Pablo.
