Why Whoopi Goldberg Won’t Be on The View This Week

The View is presently without one of its co-hosts. Whoopi Goldberg will be absent from the talk show this week, according to the program airing on Monday, June 23.

“We’re all jealous of Whoopi today because she’s in Italy—I hope it’s 100 degrees,” Joy Behar quipped about Goldberg at the start of the broadcast, along with her co-hosts Sara Haines, Sunny Hostin, Ana Navarro, and Alyssa Farah Griffin.

Behar revealed why Goldberg was in Italy: “She’s in Italy accepting an award for her book Bits and Pieces, so she will be out this week.”

According to Entertainment Weekly, Goldberg will return to The View’s Hot Topics table on July 7, after the show’s usual summer sabbatical during the week of July Fourth.

On June 21, Goldberg earned the Taobuk Award at the 2025 Taormina International Book Festival. On June 22, the EGOT winner took to Instagram to thank everyone.

“Thank you (Grazie!) @taobukfestival for giving me a beautiful experience in an extraordinary environment, an honorable awkwardness, and your kindness,” wrote the actress. “Books are so important to all the world.”

A video of Goldberg on stage in Italy was also shown on Monday’s broadcast of The View, with Behar commenting, “There she is. There’s the Queen.”

Goldberg’s most recent book, Bits and Pieces: My Mother, Brother, and Me, was released in May. The actress said that writing the memoir—a tribute to her late mother, Emma Harris, and her late brother, Clyde K. Johnson—”was “almost harder to do because it felt like losing them again.”

Harris died of a stroke on August 29, 2010, and Johnson died unexpectedly from a brain aneurysm on May 11, 2015.

Goldberg said she wrote the memoir to honor her mother and brother, but she also wanted “people to get a little bit more insight into me.”

“It’s a little bit more about where I come from and the people I’ve come from, what my blood is, who my blood is,” according to her.
